Storyhouse in Chester is following up last year's A Little Night Music with a new production of Little Shop of Horrors, running 10th May - 2nd June 2019.  Tickets are on general sale from 18th February. Priority booking is available now. |

Saw this tonight.
Great production, great cast, great show. Nothing mind blowing but a fun evening. I must say though that I love the Storyhouse as a venue and they really are doing a lot in terms of becoming a cultural hub in Chester, lots of great opportunities for young people and a huge range of events. I study in Chester and am about to finish so this was likely my final visit, I just wish I'd been able to enjoy it during my entire degree. I hope they continue to do these Made by Storyhouse productions every year.

the show sounds high energy, but oh I wish they had re-invented the plant. There are so many different ways to do it, and this seems to be the traditional way.

I hope they continue to do these Made by Storyhouse productions every year. Storyhouse is a great venue and doing a great job of cementing itself into Chester. My only reservation now is how the Made in Storyhouse programme has gone from The Beggars Opera (original commission) and A Little Night Music to The Wizard of Oz and Little Shop, in the space of a year. Maybe it's too soon to judge but obviously they're playing to the family-friendly market, going for sales after initially starting with some really intriguing and inspired productions. |

V. interesting article about Storyhouse in The Stage last week. Well worth a read.
I haven't got it with me, so don't quote me, but I think although it gets Arts Council NPO funding, it's for all the community and youth stuff, rather than to stage actual productions, hence going down the bums on seats route.
A musical version of Brewster's Millions is in development.

Went last night and thoroughly enjoyed this. The cast were excellent and the Storyhouse is such a charming venue. Never seen a production of LSOH before so I can't comment on the originality of how they've handled AudreyII but I thought it was quite well done here. I was worried this show would be a bit too pantomime-y and over-the-top for my taste but I think this production leans just far enough into that to pull off the humour without tumbling right in. Somewhere Thats Green was an absolute highlight, in fact both the two leads really impressed me. Rousing response from the audience as well, definite crowd pleaser (but no standing O you will be pleased to hear).
Word of warning rows A and B in the stalls are on the same level and I heard some in row B complaining about the obstructed view. [No idea why row A is so much cheaper, the view is perfect from the front row, stage is quite low.]

And there tonight. Very nice venue, small and welcoming. The theatre is actually inside a library so you can go in early and browse books if you like.
Seating on three sides, good tiers, so a decent view everywhere. It’s padded bench type seating so you can get close to your seats neighbours.
Front row view is perfect. Incredibly close (some may feel too close, you get bums in your face in some of the seats).
(bums as in those living on the street)
The musical is fun and charming. The whole set design reminded me of the Selladoor tour. Vocals are good. There’s a lot of gun waving (uncomfortable if you’re at the front), but it doesn’t go off.
Running time just under two hours.

Yes padded benches in the stalls, except for the back row in the two side-on sections which have individual fold-down seats. EDIT: This only applies to the lower stalls, see the video posted later in the thread! |

Ok, I only saw the Stalls, I didn't go upstairs. Had a long chat about the benches with the lady next to me, all the ones we could see were padded. |

Interesting, they change the layout. That answers the question I had about how the touring productions go there.
Also explains why the signs around the building don't match the entrance points shown on the tickets. They must be set for the non-thrust layout.
One thing I forgot to mention. You don't need to print tickets, just show the seat number on your phone. Although you should print the vouchers for a free glass of fizz, if they're still doing them, which I completely forgot.

They were reasonably priced, so they'd have gone quickly. It's not that big a theatre, so the seats in the Stalls are all decent. |

I saw this today and I thought is was great! Apart from the rude audience members sat next to me talking and humming. It really annoyed me because I would get distracted from a scene because of them. The plant at first didn't seem like the voice matched up. The lighting design was so so good. I love the wires and backlighting. I love the musical itself as well. So much fun and the songs are brilliant. Some songs were to quite for me at times but the electric guitar sounded very good.
