Can't find a thread for this, which surprises me given the cast announcement. This stars Sir Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, adapted and directed by Richard Eyre and also features Emily Watson, Jim Broadbent, Christopher Eccleston, Andrew Scott and Jim Carter. I know that some will quake a little at the promise of a fictional present day with England under a military dictatorship, but I think Lear lends itself to such changes more than some plays. We shall see, sometime in 2018.
And Karl Johnson as the Fool- I loved him in Frankenstein!

I can't quite see why Emma Thompson gets star billing in that list - can't stand her, a follower of the Maureen Lipmann "Look at me ! I'm acting !" performance style. Agree on Karl Johnson, one for the theatre aficionados. I saw Hopkins' previous Lear - appallingly badly directed by Sir David Hare - and also Eyre's previous very good production with Ian Holm. This production looks promising though I don't think Shakespeare really works on TV. |

Karl Johnson was Gloucester in the Glenda Jackson Lear at the Old Vic. He wasn't very good in my opinion and had serious problems making himself audible. I guess that won't be an issue on the radio!

And both prolific Jims. Will be watching. |

I guess it might be something to do with the fact that she has a couple of Oscars in the bathroom. And she's most probably an equal to Hopkins as well. .... hope the cuts have been made judiciously. Agree, let's hope that impenetrable mock trial scene has been entirely removed. Did you see Hopkins' NT Lear ? I think the worst directed Shakespeare I've ever seen - the current NT Macbeth is a work of directorial brilliance compared with it - and the director then had the cheek to blame Hopkins for the failure. |

I did. In fact it was my first Lear and it didn't put me off! He was probably too young and ought to have done it more recently. Sadly that year at the NT doing Lear and Antony (which was much better) made him leave the stage, think he has only did M Butterfly since. The sets and costumes were all v odd.

I did. In fact it was my first Lear and it didn't put me off! It was in the Olivier. In the scene where Lear confronts his daughters the stage was empty, they all marched on side by side, stopped at the centre of the stage and then turned and faced each other with much swirling of cloaks, delivered their lines, then turned and all marched off side by side. Literally no direction at all beyond "Go on, say your lines, come off". |

The tv clips look promising. And frankly, what a cast! Like the director made his Dream list one night in the pub and then bless em, the BBC got them all. 😂

Surprised no thoughts on here yet? What did we think? I thought AH was good, well generally the acting was although some characters seemed to have lost quite a bit and be a bit diminished as a result. I rather liked the way Home til and Regan seemed to start off uncomfortable in the first scene and really distant but wasn't entirely sure how we got from there to raging fury. Did like KJs take on the fool, a character that generally annoys me, here sort of desperate to try and keep Lear with them in his thought process but seemingly baffled by what his master was coming out with. Thumbs up for Kent and Gloucester too. Not sure about the setting, when it was all filmed modern warfare and apparently blowing up a bus stop rather took me out of it. Nice and short for tv viewing though.

Lear breaks my heart so didn't feel up to watching more than a few tiny bits of it last night but Mr Foxa loved it. Amazing cast.
