Top Hat will be running at Kilworth this August - September. 16 September to 17 August. www.kilworthhousetheatre.co.uk/whats-on/top-hat/#call01858_88_19_39Staring Dan Burton as Jerry Travers, who I always have thought would have been cracking in the role had the show been in the West End longer. Lauren Stroud is Dale Tremont. Absolutely love the music, and the West End/touring production, and although Kilworth is very local to me, the £35 seats just seem a tad pricey for where the seats are. I'll probably miss out on this, and most certainly regret not going. |

I managed to miss the on sale for this and, like you zak, am reluctant to book one of the few distant seats that now remain on the dates I can get there. Will be the first Kilworth summer musical I've missed for a few years and am doubly gutted now I know Dan Burton is taking the lead.

It's a shame the tickets at Kilworth are all one price. Yes, and fair enough, there are running costs to cover. And, £35 for a central front to middle seat would be a fair price and I would happily pay it. But to sit at the back, I would say £20. Never been to Kilworth so don't know if the theatre is 'big' enough to feel distant at the back, but it's a shame they don't employ price variation because quality will naturally vary spatially.

Zak, I'd say its verging on not a bad seat in the auditorium.
Saw it today and it was blissfully wonderful, a real tonic.
Dan Burton was fantastic, as were all the cast.
As ever at Kilworth the set was clever and inventive.
I just looked on the off chance this morning and there was a single ticket that had popped up on row J, so pleased I had a look

Being done at Upstairs At The Gatehouse over Christmas, too. I don't think I've ever been to that particular theatre but given the size of your average fringe venue I'm guessing the big numbers may be a bit of a squish? I loved the show in its original production so much (saw it 26 times) that I'm not sure I want to see it in an inevitably much reduced fringe production. |

I went to the Gatehouse earlier this year for the first time to see Paper Hearts and thought it was a pretty big, wide performance space by Fringe standards. Lovely and cool up there too! I was expecting another Landor and it's certainly not that. I imagine the venue could work pretty well for Top Hat. |

She's supposed to be in Flashdance Birmingham until 9th Dec so no doubt will be pulling out of that early then.

Upstairs at The Gatehouse is a big playing space, they did Avenue Q with all 3 houses so sure they can manage Top Hat. Stuff can be staged in traverse as well as on three sides thrust, or in the case of Avenue Q the audience were in an L shape to accommodate the set. |

I have no opinion on whether it's a good thing or not, but Joanne Clifton did rehearse Flashdance while still performing in Thoroughly Modern Millie, so she has done it before.

Many actors do rehearse one show while in another...fewer do it while in two cities at once so I think Burly is right that this probably means an early exit from Flashing, I mean Flashdance.
I've no objection in principle to someone like Joanne making a move from one form of entertainment industry to another, but I do feel like if you commit to a show then you should finish the run unless there's a legitimate reason not to. It seems a bit cocky to assume she can just walk away to another job. But maybe I'm being cynical or unkind.

Who knows what will happen in the instance - but Charlie Stemp is in the Palladium panto until 14 January and then opening on Broadway in Hello Dolly on 20 January - so there's some long distance rehearsals going on there (though I suspect Dolly has rather more money to run simultaneous rehearsals than Upstairs at the Gatehouse).

Flashdance is probably a bigger show than Top Hat and is a Number 1 tour. Interestingly no mention of casting on a couple of post Xmas venues, so maybe a new lead will come in.
The December week in B'ham will be a busy one, so I'd doubt the producers would release her early unless they got generous compensation.

I was just going to say the same as stevej678. It's seating on 3 sides, with very long rows in that centre block. It should play just fine in the shallow but wide space, I think. I'm at the first preview tonight at Upstairs at the Gatehouse and they've gone with a traverse layout for this one with four rows of seating on either side of the stage. There's also a raised platform as part of the set at one end of the auditorium, with the orchestra tucked away at the other end. The show's looking in fine fettle. The intimacy of the venue (not to mention the talent of the cast) certainly makes the big dance numbers quite a treat! |

Sounds very similar to how singin in the rain was staged a couple of years ago at same venue ... and that was excellent. Looking forward to the struggle up Highgate Hill early in new year to see this production
