Anyway, what is the actual "cost" of McKellen appearing ? The Park would have had to do a true and fair costing of the benefits, based on actual costs and apportionment of fixed costs. They can't just pluck a figure out of the air. The value to the punters is different from the cost to the Park. I agree that, for many punters, the value is greater than the total price of benefits and suggested donation. This is proven by the swift sell-out of all available tickets! |

Prett sure I read on the site that McKellan is donating his time, when I was looking the other day.
I'm sure it'll be a fab event, but it's a bit pricey for me.

It's a free country. He wants to give up his time to raise funds for a decent neighbourhood theatre in need of help? Good for him. I don't knock charity work unless it's raising funds for terrorists.
I can understand people getting worked up about huge profits for fat cats but I don't think anyone at the Park Theate is rolling in it. Sometimes t seems to me that although we all love theatre we begrudge theatres having the means to support themselves. If theatres only existed because they were subsidised or played safe commercial shows the sector would be far, far smaller and much less interesting.

I'm sure if you stump up the cash, you'll have a great time - I went to see his Shakespeare On Stage show at the BFI last year and had a great time (and you can see me on the BFI DVD/Blu-Ray of Richard III as proof) but that was about £15 to attend, this just seemed to be a little bit too steep in pricing for my liking, and it would be a fair slog for me to get to Finsbury Park, I envision people with more money than sense grabbing every opportunity to get on stage with him.
