This year's plays are supposed to be announced this month, anyone heard any goss? It will be Jonathan Church's first following his ahem departure from the Sydney AD job.

All very quiet on this, it ought to be announced any day. Anyone heard anything? No, but the cynic in me assumes it will be some Coward, a popular Shakespeare, an Alan Bennett revival (Forty Years On would have been the obvious choice) and a musical based on a popular British film...
The best things they have done in recent years have been the revivals of British comedies of the last 40 or so years: Hysteria by Terry Johnson, Bennett's Enjoy and Kafka's Dick. I'd love them to do something like that again. Perhaps with Church in charge he'll try something a little unfamiliar.

One world premiere, one UK premiere, two revivals and a visiting show.
Wed 21 Jun - Sat 8 Jul Racing Demon by David Hare starring David Haig
Wed 16 Aug - Sat 2 Sep The Lady in the Van by Alan Bennett
Jonathan Church directs both these revivals which open and close the Summer Season in the Main House.
Fri 21 Jul - Sat 12 Aug North by Northwest adapted from Alfred Hitchcock
In the Main House prior to the West End, the UK premiere of the stage adaptation premiered in Melbourne in 2015.
Thu 3 Aug - Sat 2 Sep Looking at Lucian by Alan Franks starring Henry Goodman
The world premiere in the Ustinov Studio of a play about painter Lucian Freud, directed by Tom Attenborough.
Tue 11 Jul - Sat 15 Jul Sand in the Sandwiches by Hugh Whitemore starring Edward Fox
The Main House hosts the tour of this joyous play about poet John Betjeman.

Well that's one less venue I need to spend lots of money on this summer. Less interesting than Chichester
Although N by NW sounds intriguing
Sand in the Sandwiches. I saw that last year. Maybe there's a target audience in its hundreds.
But why, just why?

I went out of curiosity.
Its nearly 2 hours of Edward Fox as John Betjeman reminiscing. Certainly not bad for what it was but nothing more.
Is Edward Fox and John Betjeman enough to fill the Theatre Royal each night. They can barely fill two levels unless its a popular show.
And what about the Theatre Royal Haymarket? Sure it is running for one week at both venues, but still.

Yes what actually went on with Church in Sydney ? None of the available explanations are convincing. No doubt the chippy and parochial nature of the local establishment was an issue. |

Sorry are we boring you ? They must have known all that when they appointed Church. Same sort of situation as with the blessed Emma Rice. Australia is unique in my theatre going experience as being the only place I've seen an audience member bring in and drink a six-pack of beer during a play. |

The new Chairman sided with the sidelined Australian theatre-makers. And, you never know in advance exactly how someone will operate. I think it's past martin1965's bedtime. |

Pleased about Racing Demon, my favourite Hare play, and delighted it will have David Haig in it. Pleased to see Henry Goodman coming back to Bath too. Can't see the point in a Lady in the Van revival; not much of a play and hasn't there just been a film? And what on earth is the point of adapting North by Northwest for the stage? It's perfection as it is. Who thinks they can equal Cary Grant?
