Thanks guys for the good summary of last night. I landed in London an hour ago and I can't wait to see Audra this evening. Could you tell me if they were selling programmes at the venue?

No programmes, unfortunately That's a shame. According to box office, during meet and greet she will "sign one item". I was hoping it will be a programme. Oh well, she can sign my ticket

I see no one has mentioned the rather odd queueing experience last night. Not sure if it will be repeated. The tickets said that the show started promptly at 8:45 and doors would be open 30 minutes prior. Rocking up at five minutes before show time for my aisle seats found me in a queue that was snaking towards Chinatown and growing by the minute, we were told we would be let in soon. There was a lot of murmuring and confusion amongst some people. We all got in fairly rapidly but it delayed the start and therefore the end of the show which if it happens again might effect people travelling home, hit the street at about 11 last night.
I so enjoyed seeing Ms McDonald live, her voice is a thing of wonder, but as others have mentioned the miking was a bit overpowering at times, with an instrument like that less is more! I think it helps that she presents as so warm and genuine, although obviously it could be an act, she has won awards for that kind of thing! It really doesn't seem to be though.
My only complaint would be that it all seemed a bit 'safe', I wish instead of Climb Ev'ry Mountain, I Could Have Danced All Night and even Summertime, thrilling though that was, there had been more eclectic choices although I appreciate there is a risk of alienating your core audience with such a move. I loved the Craigslist Leider for example.
I've spent an entertaining day thinking of songs I'd love to hear her sing/try out, jazz numbers like Satin Doll, Lush Life, Bacharach/David numbers from the 60's and 70's but mostly I kept thinking of country songs from the 70's like In The Ghetto, Till I Get It Right, Tell Me A Lie and even I Will Always Love You ( not the eardrum shredding massacre Whitney Houston version but the original plaintive style). Hck I'd even pay to see her sing Call Me Maybe!

That was just wonderful. I didn't want it to end.
My jaw actually dropped when she sang 'Summertime'.
Other highlight were The Stars & Moon, Glamorous Life, Moment In The Woods, the song from Scottsboro Boys and the song from Ordinary Days.
I will certainly be booking for Lady Day and if ENO have any sense, they should cast her in the lead of their next foray into musical theatre. That voice deserves a symphonic accompaniment.

zsazsa you are so right... Last night was absolutely amazing. Audra has a fantastic stage presence, she owns it, she commands it. She's like a force of nature. Seth was a great host, he was funny, he was sassy, he was exactly as you see him on YouTube in his Deconstructions. I think that "I will be here" was my favourite song out of the entire night, simply because it's so touching and sad. It looks like they made some child-related changes to the songs that were sung. Will performed Stars from Les Mis and "I am a Pirate King", but they didn't sing the duet. Seth also asked Audra to sing bits of other songs with Billie Holiday voice (like "I dreamed a dream") - hilarious. I will be in London in July to see Angels in America, I will definitely consider getting tickets to see Lady Day.

Agree with zsazsa's and michalnowicki's comments above - we were at last night's show in the cheap side stalls seats (fine, a bargain for £25) I saw Audra's previous show and while most of the songs were the same, the chat was quite different (naturally, she always talks about Covenant House, the charity she works with, so that was there.) Any budding professionals/creatives I think would have enjoyed her stories about auditions, Julliard, etc. Seth is genuinely funny and he and Audra work really well together. And Will Svenson was engaging, especially on 'Pirate King.' As Michal noted, they seem to be playing baby-tag so Audra and he were never on stage together. Zsazsa's list of favourite songs pretty much matches mine. And I had a few tears during 'I will be here.' 'Summertime' was sung without a mic, a lovely way to send the audience out.
Also Pault's comments about the queue outside the theatre. Yes! What is it with that? On Thursday night, there was a long queue, they didn't begin letting people in until the time when the show was meant to have started, then the show started very late. I've seen some comedians at that theatre and the front of house/box office/starting times are always shambolic, but given that some people had paid quite a lot for the privilege and some were older folk, it seemed a bit shabby.
Funny exchange: A tough looking man in the Prince Charles cinema, shouting out to the queue: What are you all waiting for? Audra queue man: Audra MacDonald. Tough man: Who? Audra queue man: Audra Macdonald. (pause) She sings. Tough man: Oh - thought maybe it was Frankie Boyle - he's playing here later in May.
So will be interesting to see if there is a big Audra/Frankie demographic overlap.

There was a a performance of Sh*t faced Shakespeare at 7, which seemed to overrun. We were there quite early and were sent to the Studio downstairs which had a bar, but once that was full I guess they held people outside. Then the downstairs contingent got restless about 8.35 and started heading up to the foyer, at which point tickets were checked and we were asked to wait again, but could at least get to the toilets!

I was going to say that I didn't experience any weird queuing issues, but I did arrive early and went to the downstairs bar, so that's probably why! I know that no one cares, but look! Here's my picture with Audra and Seth!: www.instagram.com/michalnowicki88/?hl=en

Of course we want to see your and Audra's pic! What was she like? Aww thanks she was lovely. I first had a quick chat with Seth and thanked him for all the deconstructions that moved me closer to Broadway. And then a quick thank you to Audra for a fantastic concert. I asked her to sign Lady Day leaflet I picked up at the venue, then a picture and that was it. When i got to speak to her I felt like a shy little boy, not knowing what to say. She's such a lovely person.

Once again Audra was a delight to watch, an extraordinary voice and some entertaining stories. I have to say I was a tiny bit disappointed that the songs were largely the same as last year's gig and also a bit sad we didn't see her and Will sing together (get a bloody childminder!). But the addition of Seth was fun and to be honest I could listen to her sing every night if needs be.

Well I had a wonderful night (apart from the late start and queuing all round the bloody street until they let us in at 8.55)
Seth is such a great host - hysterically funny, bringing out memories and hilarious stories. And then Audra. I could listen to her sing the phonebook. Serious. Yes it was quite a few from before (I'll be here, stars and the moon, maybe this time, climb every mountain) but she did vanilla ice cream from she loves me, and then Seth convinced her to sings Daddy's Son from Ragtime (which she turned and said 'I haven't sung this in 20 frickin years!') shed a tear at how emotional she got singing it.
Really wonderful evening!

Am now obsessed with both songs.

^ Oh my, what a treat! What is Seth's husband's voice like? I really hope that she enjoyed these concerts and that she'll be back. Or that Seth decides to ship another diva into town, so we can have a nice eargasm

I bumped into Seth in Nine Dials on Friday after seeing the concert on Thursday and asked him if there were any plans to bring Chita Rivera over. He said not at the moment because she is bringing her recent Carnegie Hall concert over in July but it hasn't been announced yet!
