The musical that nobody mentions....
A huge tour already underway which includes a stint at the RFH over Christmas but not a dickie bird on here?
Somebody must be seeing this.... or is the presence of Jason Donovan such a buzzkill that no-one wants to talk about it?

I'm seriously considering it, simply because it sounds like a good show, and I'm wondering if it'd be more enjoyable to see something which is done well, even if it's not my usual fare, than something which sounds appealing but turns out to be an interesting failure. Not, of course, that any production necessarily falls into either category.
Still debating where to see it, as the longest run is at the RFH, but that's too big and barn-like; plus the cast varies according to location and for later dates the cast is still tbc.

Martin Kemp is joining the cast for the London shows, taking over from JD. If that persuades you one way or the other.
Sounds a bit too much in the Jersey Boys genre for my liking. Not my generation, not into it.

I saw this in Las Vegas (heavily discounted to fill the theatre).
There really isn't much of a story, but the songs that were performed were good. I don't think that it's comparable to Jersey Boys or Beautiful.
The UK cast look very good. I haven't seen this production but I'm sure that it's worth an evening out. But you won't necessarily hear the "big hits" from the artists because of the whole premise of the show. I'm also surprised by some of the large venues being played as it's a low-cost shot to put on, both in terms of sets and the small numbers of cast members needed.

Not my generation, not into it. Yes, I saw that, thank you, though it makes no difference to my decision as the reviews for JD were fine and of course there have been none for MK yet. Still thinking the main thing is to avoid the RFH but if any really good deals (not just £10 off as at present) come up, I may yield. Not quite my generation, either, but for a good show that doesn't matter. |

I was this in Glasgow this week. The star of the show is the four boys who play Presley, Cash, Perkins and Lewis. Incredible musical performances both vocal and instrumental. The book is ok, a poor man's Jersey Boys.

I saw it in Birmingham recently, also on its West End run a few years back. I love the music, and while there may not be much to the show BUT the music, it's in very safe hands with the four playing the Quartet who, as zsazsa says, gave first-class performances, vocally and playing wise. I didn't even mind Jason D on this occasion (probably helped that he didn't sing!), thought he did an OK job as Sam Phillips. So while it didn't quite have the magic of the West End production for me (Ben Goddard's Jerry Lee Lewis is an incredibly tough act to follow), I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Run time a tad over 2 hours.

martin kaye who is playing jerry lee at the moment is something else - not the strongest actor to have had the role but his playing is unreal. had the good fortune to share a rehearsal building with them.

Totally agree - his playing is outstanding, I certainly didn't mean to suggest otherwise. The same can be said of Ben Goddard, however, and his acting hit the spot for me too |

Caught this today. Got a good heavily discounted stalls ticket from Todaytix for £15. Yes, it's a jukebox musical. But the musicianship is excellent. The acoustics in the RFH allow the volume to go full on - a right blast of rock and roll. 2 fun hours if you are in the right mood!
Incidentally the average audience age was seriously high, presumably reflecting the age of the music. I feel young again (like going to a weekday matinee at the Orange Tree Theatre)!

Saw this tonight, and really enjoyed it - Martin Kemp doesn't have an awful lot to do apart from saying some statistics about how Sam Phillips made his money, like a kind of retro Basil Exposition, and there's not really much holding the actual show together plot wise beyond Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins contracts but everyone involved seemed to be having fun and were in fine voice, thought the best bits were after the actual 'show' finished, maybe it was because tonight is/was the last day of the festive holidays but we got a good half an hour or so of extra songs after the actual show finished (although it was a bit hard to get too excited about Jingle Bell Rock)
