I know things can change, but I am surprised we haven't heard anything else about this. I am sure hat the original plan was to have the musical on at the same time as Ades' THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL at the Met, so that audiences could compare the two. Seeing as the opera is on in October/November this year, I thought we would have heard something about the Sondheim piece by now.

He was 74 when Otello premiered and 80 for Falstaff. With all the advances in medical science today, Sondheim’s 87 years might seem to be at least as young. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuseppe_Verdi I like Joe Green's final opera with Betty Blackhead singing Mistress Ford.

FWIW, I saw a play by David Ives this afternoon (The Metromaniacs, a "translaptation" -- as Ives calls a translation and adaptation -- of an 18th-century French play called La Metromanie, by Alexis Piron). Ives's bio in the program says, "He is currently collaborating with Stephen Sondheim on a much-anticipated musical based on two films of Luis Bunuel."

The Public Theater have just announced their 19/20 season and still no sign of this. The great man will be 90 next year, wonder if this project will ever get a production?

Damn, I'd hoped this thread bumping would mean there had been an announcement.

So Uncle Steve was on US telly last night and he is hoping Square One will be produced next year.
I'm assuming this is the show with a book by David Ives and is based on two Bunuel films. I could be wrong, I often am.
Early in the week Nathan Lane was also on the telly, talking about him and Saint Bernadette involved in workshopping new Sondheim material.
I need to lie down. What with this and the WSS new trailer how am I expected to do any work.

Fingers crossed he's right about the timeframe this time because as evidenced by the title of this thread there's a very real possibility that even though this is being worked on it might not see the light of day for a while (or ever). I hope to god I'm wrong but I don't want to get my hopes up.

On an SJS Facebook group a fan has posted this letter. Looks like Charm and Angel could be back on. I hope it's true as the material is so exciting. If it is, I love how this fan got an exclusive scoop before the NY Times!
