As much as I like the accent, whenever a Northern Irish actor is cast in a role that's a bit shouty (in this case John Proctor) I can't help thinking about Ian Paisley. Slightly distracting.
Not as distracting as the man next to me who had a medical condition which made him sound like he was suppressing a hiccup every 30 seconds. But having said that my tummy was rumbling all the way through Act 2 so we were probably equal. When Rebecca Nurse nearly faints at the end and says "I've had no breakfast" I nearly stood up and shouted "PREACH, SISTER".
Well intentioned but slightly dreary production. Hated the design/set. Hated the occasional soundtrack which was supposed to add tension but didn't. Sound is terrible the actors are not mic'd and some of them cannot be heard. Bizarre mix of costumes, some period some modern. So basically we have half of the women in smocks and half of the men in M&S coats.
Some good turns but some weak ones too. Can't name names because Sellador haven't bothered to put a cast list on the website. Charlie Condou was ok. Her out of Call The Midwife, decidedly average.
The production at the Royal Exchange a year or so ago was superior despite being hugely pared back.
Why do ghey always do Mary Warren with a country bumpkin accent? I mean, I like it but they always do that.
Its a great play but this production doesn't do it justice.

My mum went to see this at the Cardiff New Theatre last night and due to cast illness there were 3 characters reading from scripts! Obviously these things happen but no explanation was given at the start of the show, they only found out why when they asked someone from Front of House at the interval!

Saw this today at the Birmingham Alex, actually thought it pretty good, some weak casting but thats to be expected. Proctors were good as wad Danforth. Shame house was barely quarter full!
