Thought this would be a good topic: which theatre has had the best run of in house productions this year. RSC have had a brilliant year with the new ADs. Also Birmingham rep had a good couple of original productions. Would love to hear some other thoughts!

I’d agree with the RSC - it seems in a great place and I think 2025 looks great too. My other mention would be Nottingham Playhouse - particularly for James Graham’s Punch but also co-productions of Minority Report (with Birmingham Rep) and A Raisin in the Sun (with Leeds Playhouse/Lyric Hammersmith). They also staged a production of ‘The Children’ by Lucy Kirkwood that I was previously unfamiliar with but very much enjoyed and thought was really well staged. Royal Court for me. Preferred some shows over others but on the whole an astonishing year, especially considering that their new AD must have pulled it together from scratch in a matter of just a couple of months. Saw and got a huge amount from Bluets, Lie Low, Dugsi Days, Echo, Brace Brace, G and, of course, the best show of the year with Giant.

This is such a difficult question, none jump out at me. But if pushed I think I too would say RSC.

Think it's been a strong year for the Hammersmith Lyric, personally, I've seen three shows there I thought were strong - Faith Healer, The Wedding Band and A Raisin in the Sun. They do a wide range of shows, quite a few forgotten classics and somehow manage to have very competitive ticket pricing too.
But best of all for me this year has been the Trafalgar Theatre, two of my favourite plays of the year were People, Places and Things and A Mirror. I'm also somewhat in the minority for liking The Duchess [of Malfi], it's not nearly as good as the other TT productions, but I found it interesting and it absolutely held my attention. I think complaints that it lost the Webster language are somewhat unfair, as it was a modern adaptation, so I wasn't expecting Webster's text.

Agree Giant was a great play, but ironically, it felt a very un-Royal Court-y production. |
