I don't recall seeing a Principal Boy/Girl for many years. Lord, I hope the dame is not an endangered species.

The am dram and youth ones here still do reasonably often, but I haven't seen one in a professional pantomime for a long time.
I think it's possibly so producers can cast young soap heartthrobs who aren't funny enough to be a Buttons/Idle Jack-type character — if you have a Principal Boy, there isn't really a part for them.
Funnily enough, I've never seen Aladdin played by a woman. Jack (and the Beanstalk), Dick Whittington, Prince Charming and Dandini, yes, but never Aladdin.
