From The Stage...
Dirty Dancing is to be reimagined for the stage in a new musical production that will be rolled out globally.
The musical will be a "re-envisioned" version of the existing stage show, which currently runs under the title of Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story on Stage.
Called Dirty Dancing: the Musical, the new production will feature songs from the film as well as new numbers, and will open on Broadway next year. There are then plans to toll the show out into other markets around the world.

I’ve always thought that this film deserved to have a proper musical stage version. Let’s hope they get it right with this one.

“Rolled out” is an interesting choice of words.

It baffled me as to why they presented it how they did initially! Just make a musical.

I always thought this would work well as a dining show, like the Mamma Mia immersive one

It’s a classic, loads of people love it Yes, I know. I am very much aware. But still do not understand this country's obsession with it, or indeed, what inspired someone to musicalise it. Last time it ran in the West End, I won two tickets through a competition and (quite frankly) to date was possibly on of the worst things I have ever seen on stage in the nearly 20 years that I have been living here.

Thing is, if reimagining Dirty Dancing means taking out any of the iconic scenes including that finale dance then people will hate it and it will flop. Reimagining something requires it to have some depth in the first iteration, something to explore. Dirty Dancing has neither. It’s a perfectly nice film and that is literally the end of the story.

Thank you BurlyBeaR. I rest my case. Couldn't have said it better myself if I tried!

They tried a remake of the film and everyone saw how that one went! I swear to god she's on a harness for the final lift and you can see a dancer go behind her and clip it on.
That said, I do think they could do a better musical version of this than the current one. The main difficulty I'd have with it is the audience, if it ended up being the same crowd as the current version.

I got swept along with everyone else at the time, but I now find Dirty Dancing quite problematic. Abortion and child grooming are neither light-hearted or feel-good.

To be fair to them, it was rated 15 at the time of release and wasn’t marketed as the cutesie feel good movie that it is thought of today. It was praised for NOT shying away from the aboftion storyline and being a bit grittier than the average teenage fayre of the day.
