Should do well in a 10 week run. A lot of young audiences will be in love with the world it conjures up. Actually it seems more like one of those NT children's shows that is aimed squarely at the parents and grandparents who remember the book from their own childhoods rather than at a young audience who have never heard of the book (I base this on a quick straw poll). This is sensible marketing as it is the parents who buy the tickets. The NT have had quite a few clunkers along these lines over the years, Emil and the Detectives for example. You're absolutely right, it will be parents or grandparents who remember it, and will want the children to love it. They have the ticket buying power. I was thinking about how much some will love it once they get there - that whole subculture of children doing ballet classes is there to tap into. 'Angelina Ballerina' was a gateway. English National Ballet have done some 'My First Ballet' shortened versions of classics (with Narrators to help follow the story) for Age 3 upwards; though Swan Lake still ran 1hr30" including an interval. My caveat: Is this only workable as marketing in a city as big as London, and one where enough parents/guardians afford more than one Christmas outing? In smaller cities/towns Marketing Departments of theatres can be nervous that while girls are enthusiastic enough to go along to a 'boy centred story', it isn't the same the other way around. It's tricky for parents/guardians if all the children aren't on board for the one theatrical treat of the festive season; or have times changed?
