Didn’t see a thread on this but I managed to catch this during it’s sold out run at Theatro Technis this week.
First of all, it was essentially fully staged. Not sure why it was branded as a concert at all, really. In development would have made more sense.
Overall, it was OK. It was a promising start to life for yet another new British musical. If the creatives chisel down into this piece, I’m pretty sure there’s a rough diamond waiting to emerge. That this is a cult classic in the making is irony not lost on me…
But, until then, this is a fun show with some pretty decent numbers. The book feels a bit clunky and contrived in places and that’s what this development phase is for.
My main takeaway from tonight though is I’d happily pay any amount of money to see any show Emma Kingston is in forever. What a phenomenal talent and so great to see her originating a role after seeing her steal the Schwartz at 75 concert a few weeks ago. Incredible.
Three stars.
