I was aware of the play and the film version with Julie Andrews (difficult to catch, but just realised it is available on Youtube). I have been a few times to the Orange Tree, they usually do very good quality plays and easy to get there by tube or train. Got a ticket for Maughan's The circle. They also announced Grim Brenda directed by Ned Bennett (Equus, An Octoroon) but it has been postponed.

I went to see that a couple of weeks ago, I thought it was good but I was not blown away. By the interval I was a bit bored and ready to go home, but it was more likely my mistake for going to the evening performance after seeing Pride and Prejudice (sort of) at the other theatre in the afternoon. I was a bit tired and that day the journey to Richmond took forever due to engineering works. I did stay until the end.
Saying that, I agree both actresses were excellent, and I liked the musician. I also liked that the set is revolving and therefore wherever you are sitting, you get a decent view.
Annoying couple behind me who had a bit too much to drink beforehand and were loud and giggly just before the performance started, thankfully they were quiet for the duration though.

I really liked the violinist, I thought she added a nice piece to the play. I hated that the audience thought her moments were intervals/resets for chatting away through. Other than that, I found it cold and unengaging, I know that is part of the point and so the cast were doing what they were meant to and well - just not for me.

Yes, I think she added to the play: when Tara Fitzgerald's character enters and sees violinist/herself playing it gives you something extra. I agree that people think music is an interlude and not part of the play and gives them license to talk or make noise. It happens a lot (it happened also last week at Hampstead). Very annoying. I agree that the play does not blow you away, still I think it is very well written, engaging and unsentimental (which the subject might call for in other writers). |

I agree that the play does not blow you away, still I think it is very well written, engaging and unsentimental (which the subject might call for in other writers). Saw this last night. Was sold out but not full as people had failed to get there because of the train strike. Audience was very attentive and did not talk during the musical bits but listened carefully. |
