i had no idea it was opening so soon - the marketing has been dreadful!
i’m very intrigued but can’t say i’m even remotely tempted to pay what they’re currently charging for tickets…

Went tonight. The projections/holograms are actually incredible - the music is synthy pop. Overall a sort of steam punk aesthetic.

It was visually stunning but if it's supposed to be a musical, it really isn't good. The book is terrible and the music is very samey and it's at least 45 minutes too long, as the narrative that was there could have easily been told in a third of the time. So for act 2 I basically went in with the mindset that this is just a projection/visual show and ignore any expectation of an actual musical. It's like a great screening of a silent movie with background music that's super loud and some great special effects.
If they were to use this technology with an actual good story, book and music this could be phenomenal. As it stands, I struggled to keep focused, after the initial wow factor I got bored fairly quickly and just enjoyed the projections and the interaction of it with the lead guy.

I thought this was absolutely stunning. the technology is jaw dropping and worth going just to see it in action. I really enjoyed the story and the music too, I hope they release a recording at some point. My partner who is massively into steampunk adored it also.

I thought this was absolutely stunning. the technology is jaw dropping and worth going just to see it in action. I really enjoyed the story and the music too, I hope they release a recording at some point. My partner who is massively into steampunk adored it also. I was there on first preview night last Tuesday and found it an engrossing and unique theatrical experience. The technology comes close to the Abba Voyage show and I thought the musical numbers, traditional pop to my ears, were immediately catchy though I hadn't a clue what steampunk is and wrongly guessed it was the style of music... It certainly isn't a traditional musical, is almost a one man show, and does depend a lot on the special effects to make it different and, well, special but I'd definitely go again. The story is a bit daft but no more so than Bat Out Of Hell or We Are the Champions. Incidentally I booked my ticket over the phone because I wasn't sure from the online seating plan which was the front row of the stalls, where I always try to sit. I was told that a further row in front might be added . A few days before the show I received an email moving me one row forward "in accordance with your wishes". On the night I was the only person in the whole of the front row - apart from an usher at one end some of the time - while the row behind was full apart from my original seat. Excellent customer service.

Saw this yesterday after I was very intrigued by the fact it has received almost universal 1 stars across the big publications, but I actually really like the look of it from the trailer.
It was definitely a mixed bag. The ensemble is completely under-utilised and the songs featuring them were definitely the highlights - the opening song ‘Cages’ and one of the final ones, perhaps called ‘Love song’? So I would liked to have seen more of them, as the rest is almost just a one man show and was a lot of the same throughout.
It definitely lost its way in the middle, and became a bit boring and repetitive.
The overall concept is really cool though, and the projections are very clever and interesting. I really do think there could be a good show in there somewhere, by relying on the ‘real life’ cast a bit more and less on the projections, but as the show is it loses its appeal a bit after the first 10 minutes.
I do think 1 star is harsh though, and I probably would have settled on 2.5 stars, probably rounded up to 3 because it was a cool experience, but not one I’d rush back to.
(Full price tickets are also extortionate, and it’s definitely not worth the premium £90 price tag. But the £25 deal on TodayTix is decent enough value).

This is a really interesting show, it feels like watching a movie with a theatrical aspect added rather than the other way around. I agree that the ensemble is underutilized and more group numbers could improve it. The effects are great and the synchronization between the actor and the video/holograms is really cool to watch, but it definitely works more as a showcase of technology through an enjoyable musical, than a show that’s compelling on its own. The story has high stakes and different things happening and such, but for some reason I couldn’t really get invested in it. I’d give it 4 stars but that’s mostly for the technology and lead performance, although I did enjoy the music.

So glad they’ve finally released a recording, I’ve had a few songs stuck in my head since seeing the show twice that I’ve been desperate to listen to again. I wasn’t expecting them to release a recording of the entire show (instead of just the songs) which was a nice surprise.

I would say this is more of a one man light and sound show than a musical. The ensemble might as well not be there and the other 2 lead characters are both pre-recorded vocals/speech and also projections. (Although I wish they had used the ensemble more because the opening 'Cages' song was very cool and had more power to it). It very much gave me Tim Burton on steroids aesthetics and felt a little like when you watch those long form music videos where the plot is barely there, but the visuals are still very cool and the music is still good. The technical projections generally were very impressive, especially for the Madeline and Chemist character. I had many moments where I thought they could have been real and I did wonder why they didn't use live actors?
This is such a niche thing to comment on, but there's one scene where Jack Butterworth as Woolf was leaning against a projected door and Madeline who is also a projection is leaning against the other side of the door and Jack looked like he was leaning on actual door. In general Jack had to do a lot of work with interacting with the projections in a realistic way and he was really doing the most out there.
I actually quite liked the music, which was a little punk pop kind of? Overall kind of a bizarre experience and quite unlike anything I have been to before (someone made an Abba Voyage comparison, which actually kind of fits lol). I would say 3 stars maybe
