Rumours floating around that Cameron Mackintosh may revive Oliver! in 2022 - maybe after Poppins closes, or possibly in another theatre. Not surprised - I feel we will get a sh!tload of revivals once Covid passes and theatres begin to reopen - expect a lot of Olviers, My Fair Ladys, Oklahomas...
Oliver! hasn't been in the West End since Mackintosh's last outing from 2009-2011.
Any casting hopes if it goes ahead? (Hopefully we can avoid a Matt Lucas Fagin scenario...)

Alex Young would be a superb Nancy I feel. Fagin would be a name but I can't off the top of my head think of anyone.

He is going to put it into the Prince Edward and send Poppins back out on tour.
Such a shame someone with his wealth is just happy to rehash old shows. I’d put Oliver pretty low on the list of shows that are due a revival.

More than happy here to have a feel good season of revivals to get audiences in theatres (and actors/crew in work).
Matt Lucas would be an excellent Fagin and I would certainly pay to see him. A great shout.

Jason Manford could also play the part well. Good singer and popular.
Also talking of revivals Chichester is doing South Pacific postponed from last year so that could transfer as uts not been in the west end for a good few years.

I can imagine Carrie playing Nancy, could happen with Cameron I guess depending on timings and the success of Cinderella

I know people will roll their eyes at another revival, but I’ve not seen Oliver! on stage before so wouldn’t mind seeing this. I also wouldn’t mind if Matt Lucas was cast as Fagin. I don’t know what his singing is like, but I think he could be good if he was reigned in a little bit. They’d get a star name, and one that is actually Jewish for once.

The last Palladium Oliver was a massive production which I saw a couple of times. This time it would probably be scaled back I imagine due to costs etc. From memory it had a cast of at least 60 plus a substantial orchestra.

This time it would probably be scaled back I imagine due to costs etc. From memory it had a cast of at least 60 plus a substantial orchestra. Do you mean in the 2009 Drury Lane one? I agree, it was huge, because it built on the BBC TV show, so it was all about Jodie Prenger and then Rowan Atkinson when he came on board, plus the little Olivers who were also cast on TV, and then as you say a huge cast and production. I believe it was a bigger scale than the original '94 Palladium version. The Drury Lane production went on tour for a year or so after it closed in London - the tour was dreadful - produced on a smaller scale, so, similar to the current Poppins, it will probably be the 'tour' Oliver! that opens... I would personally prefer to see a Mackintosh My Fair Lady - but we probably won't see this for a while, because the Lincoln Centre revival was meant to transfer here, wasn't it?

I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread made on this topic until now. If this is true, I'd honestly be very happy! I've never seen Oliver! live, only the film. If it is being revived, it probably will be the touring production that happened after it's Drury Lane run. From what clips I've seen on YouTube, it doesn't seem too different from when it ran at Drury Lane, just scaled down, which makes sense for a tour (even though it was billed as a 'new production'. Then again, I don't know how different it was from the Drury Lane production, so if anyone can point out the differences between the two, it would be interesting to know.
Although we should put into consideration that if it is the touring production going into the West End, could it possibly be 'scaled up', if that makes sense? Not saying that will happen (it's Cameron Mackintosh afterall), but one can speculate.
As for who could play Fagin, I don't know if I'd want Matt Lucas to play the role. I wouldn't mind too much if he were cast, but I'd rather see someone else. Can't think of anyone off the top of my head though, same goes for Nancy. Maybe Carrie Hope Fletcher, although I kind of feel like she's been oversaturated a bit. Then again, I haven't seen her live yet.

I love Oliver! but I'm not particularly interested in another revival - especially one from Cameron. I'd be interested in a brand new production, but I expect we'll just get a scaled down remount of a previous show.

I can't find the article, but in a recent interview Cameron confirmed this would follow Poppins into the Prince Edward. He mentioned how he likes to revive it every ten years or so for new generations!

It would be a great gesture to the industry to create a brand new production with new creatives, rather than re-stage the Palladium/Drury Lane production or the tour.

It would be a great gesture to the industry to create a brand new production with new creatives, rather than re-stage the Palladium/Drury Lane production or the tour. I agree, it would be nice to see a new version. It's funny, because Cameron was involved for many years throughout the 1960s to the 1980s in reviving the show in its original production directed by Peter Coe. It was only in 1994 that he decided to create a brand new staging under Sam Mendes which was so refreshing at the time. Then that was remounted in 2009 under Rupert Goold (still the Mendes version). It's interesting now that people are suggesting that the Mendes version now needs to be replaced by a new production. I agree, this is theatre, it should constantly be changing... Wasn't there a revival a few years ago directed by Daniel Evans that reimagined the show with new designs, staging etc. It even did away with (gasp) Nancy's signature red dress in favour of another colour, right?

I wonder when Oliver will open? ?. It will be such a shame for Mary Poppins to close its one of my fav Disney musicals. I hope they film it (Mary Poppins) for Disney plus.

Might be wrong but doesn't Cameron own the rights to Oliver?

Paul Kaye as Fagin please. There’s a great clip of him singing ‘You gotta pick a pocket or two’ on You Tube. Simon Lipkin would also be great in that role.

Oliver is the only musical my mum can tolerate, weirdly enough, so I hope I can actually get her to the theatre with me for once! Bill Bailey as Fagin would be perfect
