Scherzinger is too old, especially for theatre. Also, I disagree that they need stunt cast for this or that they think so, Wicked would sell good enough without a name, the movie Just need to be decent.
Rossum was a nobody when she did Phantom, course the movie was horrible, but no stunt cast needed. And Phantom was as big as Wicked is these days (also, as old).

Kevin Spacey should be the Wizard. I think his hosting the Tonys could make the producers of Wicked consider him for the part. He has all it takes to be a great Wizard. He's a fantastic actor, great singer and a big name. And he's the perfect age.

I loved that they filmed Les Mis in London as the setting was appropriate with the time period, so we got loads of west end cameos. Sadly I imagine Wicked will be filmed in a studio in LA or something so we won't see our favourite performers appearing as citizens of oz. It could be filmed at Pinewood? Lots of Hollywood films are filmed there as the stage is huge? Why can I see someone like Zac Efron as Fieryo? Agree Meryl is bound for Madame Morrible but what about Oprah Winfrey?

I think you're all forgetting the most important thing... Who's gonna be fifth cover midwife?! I'm gonna sound like such an idiot asking this but I always see this joke....what does it mean?

It means the sixth person in line to go on for the role of the Midwife. The fifth person covering the awesome role of lead Midwife. She's insane, she invented the "nose" riff.

It could very easily be filmed over here, LA is probably the least likely filming location since they don't have the tax breaks there so films aren't really made there any more. It'll probably all come down to where it's cheapest to make the film and if they are doing anything on location where those locations are.

You know what, I can't even remember how it started, but it's a long-running joke on the infamous Wicked thread.

Realistically - musicals on film have a habit of going one of two ways: 1. They make shed loads of cash 2. They lose shed loads of cash
The key factor really is the casting.
By which I mean if you were, let's say, a Film Fan (characterised by a positive disinterest in theatre but will watch some films), you'd be more inclined to see a movie if it had at least a name or two you recognise.
If you were, let's say, a Musical Theatre Fan (characterised by seeing musicals but not really many films), you'd be inclined to see the movie whoever was cast in it.
There are numerous examples of great musicals being translated onto film with original cast (or stage folk, at least) and not doing especially well - look at Rent and The Producers. There are also examples, like Les Mis and Hairspray, where they cast names above theatre pedigree and the box office sings.
Wicked, like it or not, is not a big brand outside of theatre. It isn't a Phantom or Sound of Music, it never has been and probably never will be. Therefore it is 100% in the producers interest to get names on board. Whether that is Nicole as Elphaba, Meryl as Morrible or Patrick Stewart as the Wizard.

I do think Wicked is enough of a brand that they could get away with casting the leads as unknowns/Broadway stars and casting big names in the supporting roles though.

I'm gonna sound like such an idiot asking this but I always see this joke....what does it mean? You know what, I can't even remember how it started, but it's a long-running joke on the infamous Wicked thread. Wicked has a fan base of super fans that love to see anyone who isn't normally on stage being on*. It gets you extra points on the top fan scoreboard to watch them. If you hear an understudy is on (the rarer the better) you must run to the theatre immediately and book for that performance, whatever the cost, as it is inevitable that they will put on "the best ever" performance ever witnessed. The fifth cover midwife being on is the holy grail of every super fan! (* unless, of course, your favourite isn't on. Such occasions lead to melt downs by the Ozdust Boutique)

Weird thing with Nicole is she isnt right for the role in terms of age range and talent, but more to the point she isnt that big a star to make it worth casting her to sell tickets. She isnt exactly A list. Shes one of these people that keep trying to make themselves happen but never quite make it. Wicked and theatre fans will see it whatever so the point of casting a name is to get average theatregoers in and i dont see Nicole doing that

She was lead singer of one of the biggest girl bands on the planet (only one people know from the Pussycat Dolls) and has judged numerous times on both The X Factor USA and UK meaning she is well known on both sides of the pond

Lots of takes of Nicole saying her "impromptu" comments to the singers, AFTER they left the stage. She'd botched it up the first time! They edited out the empty stage from the final takes, of course.

I didnt say she wasnt known but she is hardly a hollywood name to sell a movie. Its like putting a Spice Girl in Les Mis movie

Does anything else matter? Elphaba or Glinda - box office first please.

She's not the brightest button in the sewing box. She guested on Rupaul's "What's The Tee" podcast a few months ago and he could hardly get a coherent sentence out of her. Out. To. Lunch.

Helen Mirren as Morrible would be great, I think Morrible, The Wizard, Nessarose, Boq and maybe Fiyero could be cast with big names and have Elphaba and Glinda played by people who are either unknown or semi known.
Beauty and the Beast showed the potential of how to do a musical with a huge budget and you can bet Universal ain't going to skimp on Wicked. I suspect Dillamond will be motion capture but I think the others could done with makeup and prosthetics.

What audiences really want to see is quality. Especially in this day and age, I see clips of new talent appearing all the time and going viral. People love to be excited about new things, new stars, the next special thing.
I mean, is there really 1 person on earth that decided to buy a ticket for the les Mis film because of Russel Crowe? And otherwise would have decided not to watch the film? I don't think so. If anything, performances like that avoid people from watching it a second time and avoid buying the Blu ray, it did for me. Performances like that will not stand the test of time.
Look at the Beauty and the beast film. Emma Watson was supposedly the big "ticket selling name". Yet it's Luke Evans, Audra Mc Donald and Dan Stevens that bring in the quality and sell the soundtrack and make the film lasting. And yet, Emma's performance was so bad that I can not listen to the soundtrack, and it really keeps me from watching the film again. Maybe I'll give it another go with the French dub.
What the world really warms for is that unknown wonderful talent that really shines through. Stars are so easily created these days.
There is a reason why Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music are still so wonderful today and the Phantom of The opera 2004 film and Les Miserables are not.
