"She's certainly got the pipes to pull it off on the big screen." Has she really? I wasn't that impressed when I heard recordings of her Grizabella, and I'd say Elphaba is far more vocally challenging.

Also she can't really act either. Disaster if this happens.
But then u guess the Producers want a 'name' over actual talent

I guess they can always cheat by changing keys/auto tuning, it depends on how much control Stephen Schwartz has and how much he wants to remain faithful to the music for the stage version. Given that he's confirmed he's writing new songs for the film, I wouldn't be surprised if they at the very least moved some of the big songs down a couple of keys to accommodate bigger names who can't necessarily hit the high notes as they are in the stage version.

She's "in talks" - no need to panic yet!

I really like her. They have to balance having a a leading actress who can sell the movie and also pull off the role www.youtube.com/watch?v=

Also she can't really act either I disagree. The way she pretends to trip and look shocked when she gets yoghurt on her really is sensational acting work!

She was good in Cats, but Elphaba is a completely different ballpark!

Didn't she not bother to do the "optional" opening dance number though? So her role was only to sing Memory, walk around for a bit looking confused and then sing Memory again. Hardly taxing stuff.

The fortunate thing with a movie of course is she will get all the attempts she needs to get things right

If she gets the gig, I wouldn't be surprised to see her do a short run either in London or NY. My initial thoughts were 'god no' but then I remember seeing her in Cats and being pleasantly surprised. I was still hoping for Les Michele or Sam Barks - both big enough names whilst being able to handle the role.

I'd love them to have loads of cast from Wicked old and new in the film as the "others", as they did with Les Mis.

Well yes, but they still need her to hit the notes without being able to auto tune her! I watched her on some variety TV programme and she screamed the hell of out Memory! Not a fan. Hating this news!

I would say that the quality of her singing is good, and that the role needs at least that level of singing quality.
This role needs to have long, powerful notes that go through your soul, soar and therefore feel truthful. That is the language needed with this material. No speak chirping bleating talking here.
Real singing translates to real feelings in musical film. Not constant switching.
I would prefer someone who has played the role before, as these roles need to be sharpened like a diamond over time.
So although I can see that she could be spectacular in the role, If I had the choice I would still pick someone like Rachel Tucker. And leave the supporting roles to bigger names. The good thing is, if they cast Nicole as Elphaba, they need a good singer for Glinda as well, so that can't be Amanda Seyfried, etc.
If the other roles match this level of talend and singing quality, this film could be something special. Something that stands the test of time. Not something like the Les Mis film that is completely unwatchable, especially for a second time.

I know others will disagree but I think Lady Gaga would be better than Nicole. She's a huge name, has a Golden Globe for acting, and can sing live:

OMTuneless. Nicole sh*tsinger will be perfect for this. At least people will stop banging on about how miscast Emma Watson was in Beauty and the Beast.

People talk of Elphaba as if she's Lady Macbeth. Is it an exciting role for a young(ish) performer? Hells, yes. But let's not make it what it isn't. Realistically, very few famous or semi-famous (Nicole being in the second category) can sing, kind of act, and not be ridiculous pulling this off. I think Nicole could be a fine contender. I do not expect an A-lister to tackle this, they're simply not made for this kind of role. Singing wise, she will be fine. The keys will probably be lowered (not because she can't hit them, but because it's a film and they tend to do that anyways to make the songs relevantly similar to our speaking pitch)..Anyway, whatever. Nicole could be as good as it gets, TBH. No one is getting a Kerry Ellis or a Wellemijn or a Rachel Tucker to star in this. They'll be happy if they star as citizens of Oz.

Can we not boil it down even further to the fact that over half of the story is set in school! Nicole is old enough to play Morrible!!

Would she be able to pull of the high notes though? I think Lea and Anna together would really pull people in though.
