SUMMER MUSICAL 2023
The Mill is delighted to announce that our much awaited Summer Musical is the legendary GYPSY.
GYPSY will play from 24 May – 15 July 2023.
With a fabulous score by Jules Style and clever lyrics from Stephen Sondheim, including the memorable songs Let Me Entertain You, Everything’s Coming Up Roses, You Gotta Have A Gimmick, Some People and All You Need Is The Girl.
A real treat, not to be missed!

Is this venue also a right pig to get to? Just as the Watermill is in Newbury, where I just came back from a couple of weekends ago and it cost me over £30 in taxis from Newbury Station.

I don't mind the 3 mile walk from Newburry station to watermill as its rather nice but I recognise not everyone can do it. I'm sure Dr Tom has done a similar trek from a station to Sonning. |

Just checked the good Dr's post on the Top Hat thread and had a quick Google - In my book this very doable with a nice walk along the Thames. Ideal for a mattine on a summers day.  |

Prices for current show £76 - all seats midweek, £78 weekends. This is what you get for your tea. I wonder what the business model is for this. I know Dinner Theatre is more common in the U.S, but is the theatre propping up the restaurant or the restaurant propping up the theatre?  |

I don't mind the 3 mile walk from Newburry station to watermill as its rather nice but I recognise not everyone can do it. I'm sure Dr Tom has done a similar trek from a station to Sonning. I’ve walked from central Reading, not Newbury. It’s quite a pleasant walk, the only proviso is there’s a section of the river walk with no lighting. Luckily I had my phone (torch). I felt completely safe but don’t think I would do that in the dark again. If you can time this for a summer matinee (still light after the show), that should be fine. Also, follow the river route. In my other visit I tried a different route suggested by Google Maps and ended up at a road not accessible by pedestrians. Otherwise, you’ll need a taxi (easy enough to get, but the mobile reception is not great). They are running Top Hat again this winter (excellent last year). I’ll probably aim for a matinee, walk there from central Reading (weather permitting), then taxi back (as it will be dark). |

I agree that the walk along the river to the theatre is nice. In terms of prices I know when I saw Singin' in the Rain there were a few mid-week matinees that didn't have meals attached to them so they were cheaper. I feel like they were added once it was selling well but I'm not completely sure about that.

It’s the ultimate “bar sales” tactic, because you don’t give people any choice about whether or not to have the extras. |

It is definitely a labour of love type theatre. They do a lot of fundraising with the local community too - some quite large donations. |

Thanks for the info dippy I'll be looking out for a non food seat! Its an interesting business model. I wonder if many theatre goers like myself are put off by this ? I would prefer an independent restaurant or pub that theatre goers can visit if they so wish. Can non theatre patrons visit the restaurant? |

Like I said, no idea if they always do it but it was definitely appreciated by me as I have no interest in a meal with a theatre ticket, especially as if I need food before the theatre it's just something cheap from a supermarket. The meal side of things definitely puts me off going there again unless I can make a non food show. |

Joanna Riding played Rose in Gypsy at the Buxton International Festival last summer. Note: Buxton is a spa town in the North of England with a beautiful Frank Matcham designed opera house. I've not yet visited The Mill partly because when I previously looked in 2021 there was no choose your own seat facility and reviews to the effect that some seats afforded a very poor view.I see that has now changed.
Booked Gypsy for a Saturday matinee. £67.50 for front row with a meal included seems a good deal; same price for all seats, not so good at the back or sides I think. Selling well already.
Running time is stated to be only two hours but at Buxton last year it was two and a half hours including the interval.

Anyone have any idea about seats at the Mill? Are most seats good? Not all good according to some of the online reviews but at least you can now choose where to sit. Avoiding the back and sides is usually the best policy when all seats are the same price. |
