I gave up over 2 hours ago; just like my terrible booking experiences when I was a member, but at least I'm no longer paying to be frustrated and stressed.

Not for the first time I wished the NT had an option to book a single production/ticket only, as with self-service supermarket checkouts for "5 items or fewer" or "basket only". Infuriating to be stuck in a queue behind people who might be booking multiple tickets and for several productions.

I was looking after a friend's dog so just when I finally got into the booking it began making noises like it needed to be taken outside, so all very stressful - panicked and ended up quickly booking two inexpensive but very bad seats for Motive - and that's it.

I was working until late yesterday and while I saw the comments in here about the kerfuffle trying to book tickets, haven’t managed to go onto the NT website until this afternoon: I was expecting the whole run to be gone but there was actually a fair selection of seats still available and got a 4th row stalls seat for £20 in early May, I had no intention of paying £70 to see it so I’m happy with this.
I can’t remember the last thing I saw at the NT but it was a good few years ago, I’m thinking it was The Red Lion but the offerings since have all been a bit ‘hmm…’ for my liking so I hadn’t even looked at availability.

I hope the dog was ok in the end! I also went for a (probably) bad seat on the side - I have never sat there before. Panicked that I wouldn't find another cheap seat if I did not go for it. |

It was before the Rush started so I think it was just the luck of the draw (it was advertised as a restricted view, narrow seat but it’s in the fourth row and almost central so not sure exactly how restricted the view will be but I’ve sat in similar there before without getting my arse stuck in the seat or having to stare at the back of a prop)

When Motive first was announced, the dates from 27th June to 15th July were listed on the NT website but then were subsequently removed. I had queried the gap between 10th and 27th because that was when I had wanted to see it if possible. It was obviously always planned to announce these extra performances.

Running time of two hours and forty minutes according to the NT website but as they haven’t even started the previews until tomorrow that is obviously open to revision: I’ve only realised today that the night I’m going is on coronation day so hopefully everything in central London won’t be too disrupted 😬

The first preview was cancelled the day before it was due to start so maybe technical issues?

“What's happened with Motive and Cue at the National Theatre ? They've cancelled the first preview tomorrow, citing not enough time to complete the technical rehearsal”
No further knowledge, all second hand, but was cancelled on webiste.

Wow, so my second preview last night was indeed the first! I thought it was delightful (so did the audience - big cheers at the end, instant standing ovation) but I normally do like the sneak peak behind the stage and see how great things made out of blood, tears, slammed doors, good intentions and compromises. I’d say the show is in a very good shape but you’ll never know cause the most of it is about a rehearsal process anyway. And because of that there is a space for it to be growing, might even feel completely different by the closing night. Both leads are perfectly fitted for the part and playing off each other nicely: Mark Gatiss as ‘Sir John’ is gentle, sharp and highly intelligent, Johnny Flynn as ‘King Richard’ is conflicted by his own bloated ego and the strive to be truly great. A lot of Uncle Will related jokes from other plays that brought quite some chuckles in the auditorium. Mendes is theatrical as always, big gestures, but here it fits perfectly considering the subject matter. I found it too cold to wait by the Stage door but I do wish someone could tell Mark Gatiss that he should do more Shakespeare. Such rare talent to articulate it so clearly, pace it so well and feel every line so deeply it hurts. His ‘Speak the speech, I pray you’ is going to stay with me for quite some time.. As for running tome I was out by 10:15. I personally think you are particularly in for a treat with this show if you are into various interpretation of Shakespeare and like digging deep. Might be a miss for you if you don’t. I saw a couple beside me split in the interval, the husband went home cause he couldn’t stand this Shakespearean talk any longer, and the wife stayed only to enormously enjoy herself. She then said it might be because she brings him to too many shows |
