It’s supposed to be released 20th December 2023 which is the same week as Wicked. Two movie musical releases the same week seems unlikely?

I just struggle to see this being a mainstream hit.
A worthy project but of limited audience appeal.
I may well be wrong. But I can't see this troubling multiplex screens for long.

I wonder if Cynthia Erivo was offered the lead role in the film. She is certainly well known enough especially after her recent films and nominations.

I wonder if Cynthia Erivo was offered the lead role in the film. She is certainly well known enough especially after her recent films and nominations. I think Fantasia is more closely associated with it in the states, hence her casting. |

- Taraji P. Henson is an Oscar and Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner. Have you seen Hidden Figures or the Curious Case of Benjamin Button?
- Ciara is successful Pop/RnB artist.
- H.E.R is a popular singer and has been nominated for five Grammys.
- Halle Bailey is part of Halle x Bailey with her sister, also Grammy nominated. She will play Ariel in the upcoming live-action Disney film The Little Mermaid.
- Corey Hawkins was in In The Heights and is Tony nominated.
- Jon Batiste is a singer and has five Grammys.
... to name a few. I think the movie is in safe hands...

Thanks for the breakdown. I'm not saying anything against them being cast in the movie I am merely saying "I" have never heard of any of them. We can't all know the same actors and performers. So it wasn't meant as a criticism it was merely an observation. |

Fantasia's is a bit more raw and soulful and maybe they wanted that rawness for the live action? Or Cynthia is just booked up... |

And I also wonder if Cynthia doesn't want to always be known for The Color Purple and nothing else. So she is constantly changing direction and going for new challenges.
In fact, I'm just listening to her Proms concert last week which I thoroughly recommend. I was meant to have been there but with the heat and transport difficulties couldn't get there. Regretting it now.

Oprah has said in the past she wanted to make a movie adaption with Fantasia. Fantasia has also said that she didn’t audition for the role and was just offered it, so who knows what Cynthia’s involvement was. |
