I always assumed it was more to do with the audience’s verdict on how much they sounded like the singer they were pretending to be? Hence not applauding until after the opening lines rather than as soon as they recognised the opening bars? Yep, me too. It was supposed to be spontaneous applause at the remarkable likeness to the person they were impersonating 🙄. I went to a live recording at Granada Studios once. Matthew Kelly was charming and brilliant with the audience in the many many many breaks in recording. Christ it took a long time. And it was all recorded topsy turvy and out of sequence. Even before we saw a singer we were filmed applauding wildly, pressing the voting buttons studiously and generally “reacting”. They had to give out water and those little tetrapacks of orange squash with the straw to stop people fainting from dehydration BUT going to the lavvy was strongly discouraged if not forbidden. I thought it would never end and I couldn’t give a toss who won by the time it was announced. I’ve never been to a live recording since despite living 5 minutes walk from Quay Street or a tram ride from Media City. I’d rather watch it on the telly! 😌

I went to a ‘celebrity’ ‘Tipping Point’ a few years ago and the amount of rigmarole that happens between each drop is painful. Drop, amount of counters counted by independent adjudicator who communicates to Ben how many have dropped via earpiece, Ben tells us…thick as thick can be Love Island ‘hunk’ gets practically everything wrong so we ‘go again’ to save his blushes, French footballer understands substantially less English than expected so we ‘go again’ etc. Painful.

Disgraceful behaviour frome a Proms audience. 😀 I was there and audience was really well behaved. She/arranger placed a couple of weird pauses in the middle of the song and people applauded. For the rest of the show, including the a capella beginning of The first time I ever saw your face, we were all in awe and very well behaved. Amazing show. Don't believe the Evening Starndar review, I think we saw two different shows.
