Starcrossed - Wilton's Music Hall

Just wanted to shout-out this incredible show I saw today.

A touching, exquisite LGBT reimagining of Romeo & Juliet. Very cleverly done with a cast of three men - I don't want to give too much away, initially I thought it would be a gender bender Juliet (it's not). Instead it's a behind the scenes look at an untold story of characters from Romeo & Juliet - what Wicked is to the Wizard of Oz, if you will.

The script is incredible, weaving the original Shakespeare with new work seamlessly. Even though I have seen Romeo & Juliet a hundred times, I was caught off guard at times thinking to myself - wait is that a new line or did X say that in the original. :-P

It has changed the way I view Romeo & Juliet now - I'm going to view the events of Starcrossed as canon! :-)

Only on till the end of June - go get a ticket!

This does seem to be getting rave reviews all over the place which is fab. Great to learn about a new gay play particularly when it is so well received.

It really is very intelligently done

Was about 70% empty when I went, which is a mighty shame

I will be returning at the end of the month to support!

My first time at this venue and oh my god it's gorgeous. Dilapidated but in the best way. The show was poorly sold when I was there too - maybe 10 people total in the balcony? They moved everyone to the front of the stalls and centre of the balcony so it was nice to have a better view than I paid for, but must be awful for the actors to look out and see so many empty seats.
We had the understudy for 'The Player', who plays everyone except the main couple, and he did phenomenally. It might have been his first show? But he was a total scene stealer every time he was on stage. Overall I really liked the play itself. Some very sweet moments but a depressing ending that can't really be avoided (unless they felt like deploying the & Juliet approach to Shakespearean deaths). Act 1 did feel about four times as long as Act 2, though? I still don't really know why. But for great performances all round, a nice twist on Shakespeare, and a hidden gem of a venue, it's definitely worth a ticket.

I really enjoyed this - I thought the characters were really well explored and seemed believable. There was a nice contrast between Tybalt and Mercutio which feels faithful to Shakespeare's text but still allows for originality and creativity. Also, kudos to the middle man, playing all the other characters. All in all, had a really lovely afternoon in Wilton's and great way to celebrate pride.
