"The Other Palace" will simply cause mass confusion (just as "Apollo / Apollo Victoria" / "Hammersmith Apollo" and "Lyric / Lyric Hammersmith" do) with the Palace and (if Cam Mac doesn't re-name it, the Victoria Palace) in due course, I'm sure. I'd love them to reconfigure the main auditorium but it seems to me that the seating follows the architecture so it would be very difficult to reconfigure without a major rebuild or reduction in capacity. No. The auditorium is wooden steps within the concrete box of the walls. To rip out all the planks the seats rest on and re-configure so that people with legs are comfortable would be simple, if they were willing to pay for it. It's lewd Rubber he is famously tight. He will not refurb, although he may apply to ACE for funding ... (Or he may vote in the House of Lords for benefit cuts) |

If they using the venue to showcase new musical, why aren't they going to showcase Clockmaker's Daughter, which a lot of us raved about on here, did other industry types see a different show to us, or they didn't bother because going to a theatre below a pub is below them!

If they using the venue to showcase new musical, why aren't they going to showcase Clockmaker's Daughter, which a lot of us raved about on here, did other industry types see a different show to us, or they didn't bother because going to a theatre below a pub is below them! Andy himself went to see Bar Mitzvah Boy when it was running at Upstairs at The Gatehouse, so even the Lord isn't averse to seeing something at a venue with a pub below it. As far as Clockmakers goes... 1. We have no idea what Lloyd Webber is planning, programming-wise, and may have that penciled in. Give the guy a chance. 2. What would be the point of taking a fringe show and putting it in another fringe space for a limited run? It ether needs to go to a bigger theatre or be able to run opened ended. I expect the cast/crew/band/creatives got paid peanuts for the fringe run last time, so doing it all again for the same fringe money probably isn't massively appealing. |

At the St James they can actually afford to pay the cast, so that is something.
Big jump from a fringe theatre to the St James, the fringe is really a workshop, where people pay to see it, with a transfer they can develop and upscale the show more, in this theatre it will catch the attention of major critics and people from the industry, at least if the show comes of nothing, we know it had the best shot possible.

Wasn't it originally called The Westminster Theatre? I think 'The Other Palace' is laughable. Just leave it as the St.James!

I once saw Joseph there, and we visited from school to see something called One Friday featuring Ruth Madoc. I actually misread the initial post and thought it said The Other Place. |

If we can all pick a name, I'm want it to be "The New Westminster Theatre". It sounds like it might be a bit modern, producing works with a bit of edge, but still very British, and it tells you where it is.

I'm not keen on theatre named after their location like the Piccadilly, Savoy, Aldwych etc maybe Lloyd Webber should call it something like the Hal Prince Theatre.
Going off-topic but I wonder if Nimax will name their new theatre when it opens in 2020 The Astoria or will they go for something else?

Given that when the Astoria was demolished music fans were promised a new similar venue to be built, and instead are getting a theatre which is a quarter of the size and seems to be clearly a theatrical venue and not a music venue, I suspect they will hope everyone has forgotten about the Astoria. The Astoria was my favourite venue in London, and as much as a 500 seat West End space appeals (perfect for fringe transfers and cutting edge new work I'd imagine) I greatly lament the removal of it. Many happy rock gigs were had there, with the walls dripping from sweat. |

My guess is that it will be referred to as the TOP so it's not a bad marketing strategy to have your show at the Top theatre in London.

It has gone all quiet, on the theatre that is due to open next year to be run by Hytner and Starr, it is going to be located near Tower Bridge I believe.
I wonder what they going to call this?

It's the London Theatre Company, it doesn't open until next Autumn. To be clear the London Theatre Company is the company, the theatre is as yet not named (unless someone else knows differently). Further, they state it will be their "first new theatre" and "we’re actively exploring other venues and hope over the next few years to be able to open a number of new independent theatres, of different scales but operating on similar principles".
I hope they don't try to call the theatre the "London Theatre" given London already has one or two other theatres (and it already is the name of a fringe theatre near New Cross).

First ALW season to start from the end of January (after Rent). New restaurants, no changes to the auditorium (boo!) but plans being discussed to 'reposition' the space and adapt the 'look and feel' of it. (Those two statements seem contradictory, maybe that means "no changes now but we're looking into minor improvements") Other Palace not confirmed as new name, says a number of names in the mix and Westminster Council have to approve any change.
