These news made me so happy - I'm not sure there's any movie more heartwarming than Totoro, and though the Kiki's Delivery Service play - was it Southwark Playhouse? - put on a few years ago was adorable, I felt it needed a bigger production to really work its magic.
Since the announcement also says that Joe Hisaishi himself will be involved, they've surely already jumped the biggest hurdle in how to transfer Ghibli magic to the stage, because I can't imagine any sort of adaptation without his music. (Can they still mess it up? Sure! But these news made me put on the soundtrack on Youtube, and it was an instant goosebumps moment.)
(So happy to see Totoro plushies in the RSC shop, too. Have never bought any sort of plushie or toy at a show, will absolutely buy a Totoro if they have them at the Barbican.)

I like Studio Ghibli but I’ve never quite understood why Totoro is so popular. It has some great moments but I’ve always found it a little dull. Cautiously optimistic for this though after watching the promo video, and after seeing that the film’s composer is heavily involved as one of the main producers and it will feature his music performed live.

I think Princess Mononoke is probably SG's best film although that would be trickier to adapt to the stage. |

Heh, I'll go the opposite. Judging from the interest levels from non theatre friends who are all over Twitter about this right now. I can see this selling really well. Let’s see. It’s running 15 weeks in a 2000 seat theatre which has only sold out for Anything Goes in the last decade. It is apparently a family show so it needs to appeal partly to people like me as I spend £100s a year on Xmas family shows - however I’ve never heard of this and neither have the children I’d take so we won’t be going. The association with Disney is not a guarantee of success - Pinocchio at NT demonstrates that. Well, tell you what. Should we ever end up at the same showing of anything over the coming months and years and *should* I end up being totally wrong here I will then happily admit so and buy you a beer/wine/beverage of choice 😇 |

I love the Ghibli films, never seen a bad one and I think I've seen them all - my personal favourite is "Spirited Away". The adaptation of "Kiki's Delivery Service" at the Southwark Playhouse was rather charming.
Looking forward to this but share the concerns of those who feel the RSC seems to be veering away from its stated intent.

For the last three years I've been trying to make a topiary Totoro from our ever-expanding yew tree (the belly is good, but I need a taller ladder) and my mum calls the local bus the 'catbus' after dark. My mum was excited about this too and was hoping it would tour to take our young relatives, also fans of the film. In the 2000s I had a part-Japanese housemate and he said it has the status of something like The Railway Children or an upbeat Whistle Down the Wind or Spirit of the Beehive there, a very beloved, nostalgic, gentle film.

Public booking at the Barbican Centre opens tomorrow - they are saying at the moment that tickets are: Preview performances: £20.00 - £62.50*; Performances from 19 October: £20.00 - £72.50*
*A limited number of premium seats are available from £85.
So looks as though they are a lot less expensive than the tickets for the return of Anything Goes.

I'm a Barbican member and so booked last week. From the dates I looked at it seemed to be selling well. But, of course it's a longish run and so that may not be true of dates past October.

Yup. One of the most famous Japanese movies of all time. Often highly ranked by various World Cinema *and* all time greatest movies lists. Comes from Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki who have won dozens and dozens of major awards over the past four decade, it must be now, including at least a couple of Oscars.
It is by no means something small or obscure and would very much fall under iconic!!
Interesting. It’s a 1980s thing ? I asked a couple of children and they hadn’t heard of it either. Nevertheless I predict death at the box office for this one. It reminds me of the Terry Hands “Carrie” fiasco. Can't win 'em all ;-) I booked as soon as possible and the pre-sale link crashed due to traffic. This will do absolutely phenomenally well. I really, really can't wait. |

I just checked a few random dates in the middle of the run and hardly any seats were sold. Obviously a cult show like this will sell fast to the fans but they apparently aren’t numerous enough to sell out the run. |

Baz mentioned in his article on Deadline about My Neighbour Totoro transferring to the West End after the Barbican run but I'm not sure what theatre would be suitable, maybe the Gillian Lynne at a push or a larger musical house if one becomes available.
I'm quite excited that the Jim Henson Workshop is involved, the work they do is incredible
