Spoke too soon. Act two cancelled. Somethings definitely awry at the Young Vic. Oh no! And now it looks like it’s back to the concert version tonight. What is going on??

So act one this afternoon went off without a hitch. You'd never have known there had been issues. Was very much enjoying it. Then the interval time passed and we were told it would be about another 10-15 minutes, and then someone came onstage to announce the cancellation. It was a bit hectic but we decided to wait out and try and rebook there and then, between my dad, sister and I we only had next Saturday we could do. Luckily, we got three singles for the evening show next week, so we'll give it another go. There was some people there very frustrated, this being their third time it had been cancelled.
It's a shame they couldn't finish this afternoon, since a concert version could go ahead tonight. I did overhear a member of staff saying it was an unusual situation.
Fingers crossed for next week...

Proof, if proof were needed, that Mark Shenton hangs out here as he posted all of Mark's post above about the mid-show cancellation in his Twitter feed, without source or attribution.

It's lazy and it's rude. It's nicking content that other people are creating and spending time managing. He should have checked with Mark that he was happy for the post to be quoted (maybe he did, we'll see) and, at the very least, included a link to Theatreboard to promote the site. Otherwise, he's just stealing stuff for free. And he'd be the first to complain if someone grabbed a bit of one his reviews and reposted it without mentioning who had written it and where it had been published. I'll get off my soapbox now.

I'm not on Twitter otherwise I would raise. He was also targeting a theatre producer who got listed in STAGE 100 somehow undermining their achievement. For someone who preaches BE KIND; quite ironic that he doesn't put this into action.

I think maybe take this to the other thread but I don't respect hypocrites.
Hope that Mandela cast/crew are OK.

He really is a whiny, entitled hypocrite. If the cast has an illness, they deserve sympathy, not what he's doing.

Well he's now blocked me on Twitter, which is a shame given I've met him and his husband socially, and got on with them. He posted something factually inaccurate about me - that I posted on this board after saying that I would end the discussion, whereas my postings on this site were prior to that tweet. But then he blocked me so I couldn't respond. I am sorry, because I don't like falling out with people.
I guess what I find odd is that if this is a toxic brand filled with clowns why he thinks it's worthy taking quotes from it and distributing them further. Over and out.
Apologies for derailing this thread, happy if the mods decide to move these posts elsewhere.

Does anyone know if this is running properly yet? I have tickets for Saturday and would rather a refund than turn up to see a concert version.

I didn't particularly enjoy this. They crammed about 30 years worth of history into this show, which means there are a lot of things to cover, but somehow they don't seem to cover anything at all. This is very much almost a sung through musical with barely any dialogue, however, the songs don't really advance the plot or say anything, so you don't really get any story telling (which is probably why it feels like time is passing but nothing is happening). It was also a bit rogue for the writing team to start the story just before Mandela gets imprisoned and finish it as he gets out, meaning all we really see Mandela do all musical is sit in jail. I don't know if they were going down the route of naming the show 'Mandela', but actually wanting to tell the story more of Winnie Mandela (a la Hamilton) and his various children instead?
The songs themselves felt very samey and I would have categorised the songs as the 'fighting fire with fire' song, the close harmony acapella type songs and the Warden's song and everything else was some kind of reprise of that.
I had the understudy for Mandela on and he was fine, but I didn't really feel like I was getting very much from him. In general, the South African accents could do with some work.
I'm glad I did get to see the full version rather than a concert version of the show because my favourite part of the show was the choreography. I thought that was fantastic.
