Anybody think that this is due a big London revival?
Apart from Chichester (2008), we've had no big revival since the original production at the Adelphi in 1961.

The Chichester production was perfection. It should have transferred but it didn't work out

Who starred in the Chichester production? Brian Conley and Scarlett Strallen.

I've done this show twice as an amateur and loved it.
Time for a revival

I haven't heard of Brian but I bet Scarlett was great! Taking bets now, you're either very young, not a British national, or live under a rock. There was a period (I think it was basically the entirety of the '80s and '90s?) when you simply couldn't switch on a TV set without having Brian Conley gurning back at you.

Loved the Chichester production. One of their very best imo.

It was done in Regent's Park in 1995 with a different Brian - Brian Cox! I love the musical but I remember that revival being a bit of a mess - Brian Cox (who is an absolutely fabulous actor) was woefully miscast and seemed to be wearing clown's make up.

Is he a good stage performer?

I am so good at guessing, go me! He was very good in The Music Man at Chichester, but I've mostly only seen him work as an entertainer rather than an actor.

It was fabulous in Chichester. Scarlett was perfection.. Conley not so much. It was going to transfer to the New London and then it fell through. It should be revived again with Strallen and someone better as Harold Hill.
It also featured great choreography and a neat design

I've only seen Brian live in the Oliver tour and he was very good in that.

I'm a huge fan of Brian Conley, seen him four times in panto, but only one musical (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang which he was great in!), bit gutted I missed him in Barnum and Oliver! - and The Music Man for that matter as it is a musical I'd quite like to see!
As I said on the previous forum, Seth MacFarlane did a fantastic cover of "Ya Got Trouble" at the Proms a few years ago, but him starring in a musical would be highly unlikely.

He also covered "The Sadder But Wiser Girl for Me" on his album (and we mustn't forget Peter Griffin's "Shipoopi" ) and sounded great, I was just thinking about him. I feel like he may have said he'd like to do stage work in the future, but I could be wrong.. I think he could be great- he's got great comic timing.

The Music Man was my first Chichester musical and was indeed my first musical I ever did as an amateur, playing Winthrop Paroo when I was 8 years old with my Grandma's amdram society (with my Grandma playing the Mayor's Wife!), so it holds a very special place in my heart! Though I was 14 when I saw it at Chichester, I have only very vague memories of the show as a whole, though I do remember some specific parts but I do know that I completely adored it and thought Brian Conley was simply perfect (as I thought he was in Barnum, too!) and the whole experience was just thrilling. I distinctly remember the audience applauding during the opening when the men put their luggage down and the stage started revolving as if it were a train as they began Rock Island.

Brian has been fab in everything I've seen him in: Jolson was my favourite, followed by Barnum and Oliver. I've seen him in many pantos but it does tend to be the Brian Conley show where panto is concerned. It'd be great to see him in something soon (other than panto)

I have to disagree about Brian Connolly. To me he takes over whatever he's in and it becomes "his" show.
I can remember years ago seeing Michael Barrymore singing 76 Trombones and thinking at the time he'd be a great Harold Hill.

He was dreadful in Barnum but claimed to have a sore throat.

Years ago I cast him in my head as the perfect Harold Hill... And it was a huge disappointment that he didn't deliver in the role at all. Damien Lewis would probably play it well..
