I saw the show on Tuesday night and again on Wednesday night. I loved it just as much as I did three years ago at the Southwark Playhouse. I hope for a West End transfer.

Which characters are people thinking of? I think the whole point of me/others not saying which roles they were is called being sensitive to others feelings. There was one guy in the cast who k thought was just dreadful, wooden, bad singer and bad actor and should not have been cast (his voice was click tracked in a major show and he had to mine over it) but alas it's not too fair to hang people out to dry.. Fair enough. I just wanted to know if it was the one I thought too. |

I didn't notice any camp blokes in this production. The movie, on the other hand, is the campest thing I've seen since my week at Pontins in 19-I-don't-want-to-think-about-it. Me neither. The telegraph operator was quite prissy but I thought it was an acting choice, being an actor after all. |

I'm not even sure he was prissy, littlesally, more the correct "nerdy Public School boy" mannerism of his era, I felt.
And if you listen to the OBCR you can hear that Martin Moran, who played the role on Broadway, played it very much the same way.

It's certainly possible to see the scene that way, in part, but for me Bride (the telegraph operator) is a solitary, someone quite apart from everyone else on the ship and it's Barrett's openness and friendliness that get through to him and make him want to help him with his message to his sweetheart.

Thank you TheatreBoard for letting me win last months comp! I had such a good time  First of all, I arrived at the theatre at 7.31 (thank you suspended piccadilly line) and felt so bad for being late. (in 20 years of going to the theatre A LOT, this was my first time being late..) But in the end it was the best thing that could happen, as we did miss the openingscene, but: -tiny spoiler-: they use the audience entrance for the actors to leave the auditorium during the opening. (That's all I can 'spoil' as I couldn't see what was going on on stage). So me and my friend were patiently waiting with an usher to be let in the auditorium, and cast members ran singing, half undressed to switch roles, and with a lot energy by us before re-appearing on stage again. Very funny to see a bit of backstage buzz. The show it self was amazing. Really strong ensemble, I personally love the score, and I thought the staging was very clever. Sometimes it did felt the show was a bit static though, maybe because the set never really changes or so, but in the end, everything worked out for me. -the last scene, I thought was very impressive- As said, the cast was really strong. The only thing -I don't mean this in an offensive way, but I just have to share it- is that two of the male-roles had a line something like 'I'm married to a woman' but they were portraying there roles in a pretty 'gay'-way. That was the only thing I really did not believe, haha! For a second I thought it might was a joke or so, but nothing happened with it story-wise, so I guess it just made that impression on me, and therefore I didn't believe him. But furthermore I believed it all, and felt like I was in a first, second, third- class, cold, dark sea and may or not be in a lifeboat. (lights off during dark-sea scenes, clever special effects with the collision etc) Sorry for this awful review,but thanks again TheatreBoard. I loved this show but had great issues in the obvious gay performers playing straight roles. That's not homophobic - I love my gays galore - just play the roles as they are meant to be!! Straight!!! Mincey Priscilla Titanic just doesn't cut the mustard with me. The fact that so many people have mentioned it, says it all. I really didn't notice this at all! Yes, the telegraph operator was prissy, but sure there is the world of difference between "prissy" and "camp"! |

Claiming 'historical accuracy' is a clever way to try and dismiss others' opinions, but in no way can be proven. The fact that a lot of people felt the same means the actor is obviously not making his choices clear or 'historically accurate' enough.

Cast excellent
Loved the threads of the characters running throughout
Shame the theatre was less than half full
And the sinking of the ship was a slight let down

I wouldn't even know how to 'flame' someone. I've never heard that word used as a verb before.
The way you talk about things being 'balanced' just shows how you think your comment was correct. Maybe you're not used to people questioning you or your opinions. Saying something 'rules out' something is pretty dismissive don't you think?

Basically, is it enough like the London show I've just seen or was Broadway a lot different? The Theatre itself is fine and the temperature was good too. The bar area was much hotter. A bit of drama as I left, an audience member having a go at one of the ushers. Will talk about it in the Bad Behaviour thread tomorrow as I'm not really sure whose side I'm on. (Actually, they were both a bit in the wrong.) Anyway..... D'James - did you ever post this in the Bad Behaviour thread? I was also there that night, and saw that there was a bit of an argument. Am very intrigued to know what it was about.... Thanks |

On Today Tix, it says you get a free upgrade to premuim saeats if you book the £29.50 seats.
The seats it offers me are in Row S, but they are normally 29.50, so why does it tell me I am saving £20 on 2 tickets? Do they give you different seats on arrival?

still, i've got to pay £29.50 regardless, so i'll book anyway, but it's very dodgy advertising on Today Tix.
Has anyone not used their referral code yet?

Seems to be selling rather better than reports on here suggested. Looking on Aug 1/2 both dates have only a handful of premium £39.50 seats and then nothing in front of row R...

Went to see this last night and was blown away. OK the theatre wasn't the grandest but once you hear the orchestra and the extremely talented performers you don't notice the surroundings!
All of the cast were outstanding and wouldn't be able to single out someone as a favourite. They made great use of the stage and as a small cast were taking on multiple roles which I imagine puts extra pressure on but you wouldn't notice that.
The vocal range of some of the talented cast were amazing and they could do with teaching the Aladdin folk a thing or two about projecting and pitch!!
For the price of a ticket I would whole heartedly recommend going to see this and if I lived near London I would return to see this. Which says a lot as I'm not really one for returning to shows!!

Having a similar dilemma, but in my case, I don't want to go if I'm going to be sat in Row V (which is what it's giving me for the £29.50-reduced-from-£39.50 ones). Getting a 'free' program and glass of champagne isn't much use to me, since I'm booking three tickets and don't have the use for three programs in my house, and only one of the three of us drinks. On the other hand, I'd be sozzled before it starts! |
