I’m actually relatively relieved now to have Sheila Ferguson in Bristol where it’s sold pretty well following this revelation. So why the need for this ridiculous stunt casting? Are the ticket sales dire elsewhere?
I can’t imagine her run being very long. Perhaps only a handful of stops on the tour and have her all over ITV Daytime flogging tickets.

My kind of show Chicago is. Faye Brookes sings and acts up a storm as Roxie, although at times I’m straining to hear some of the dialogue. Same with Russell Watson, but he smashed We Both Reached For The Gun - “The Voice” getting it’s chance to shine at the end of that song. Sheila Ferguson maximises the comedy out of her role as Mama Morton and brought her own singing style to When You’re Good to Mama. Djalanga Scott high kicks up a storm as Velma Kelly. So great to see the iconic Fosse choreography again.

She did the singing show where 100 people judge (Geri Halliwell, the title escapes me) and she was surprisingly alright. I'd be more worried about her diva-behaviour and her inability to stick at anything. |

How did a musical which originally relied so heavily on its leads being very accomplished dancers/musical theatre performers become such a stunt-cast vehicle for anyone with a "name"?

The Weisslers saw stunt casting as a way of keeping interest in what is basically a Chicago concert. It worked. I don’t know if they are still involved/alive?

Oddly, considering she’s a bit of a joke overall, I suspect she can sing it. Mama Morton isn’t difficult, and she has a decent voice. It’s the rest of the responsibilities of the role that I’d be surprised if she can do. Everything from the acting side through to behaving like an actual professional.

I suspect it’s the one role in the show where you can get away with minimal acting. But I have wonderful memories of Meg Johnson doing so much more than that in the original revival cast - the right person can elevate it to so much more than a couple of songs.

So Gemma, we need you to arrive at the rehearsal studio at the time we've specified. You won't have a PA with you, so you'll need to bring whatever food and water you'll need. You'll also get quite sweaty, but we won't be stopping to check your hair. The calls are 3 hours long, and we don't stop just because you're tired. We have a schedule to keep to. Speaking of the schedule, we'll need you to have learnt the script and lyrics before you arrive... we don't teach you that. How's you American accent by the way? Obviously as you haven't been singing professionally as a career, the vocal calls will be quite a shock to the system. We'll expect you to rest your voice afterwards. So no partying, or shouting. There's no point in us training you up, only for you to then lose your voice. Once we've trained you up, expect the producers to come in and have extensive notes.
Then we're out on the road, so you'll have to book your own accomodation. You'll need to find food near the venue, and get there each week without being late. Speaking of being late, there's a physical and vocal warm up before the show, which you're contractually obliged to attend. And then it's 8 shows a week, with a sound test at each venue.... and no, the Company Manager isn't your personal assistant. We can't magically find you your own dressing room with a spare one for clothes.
And if you could test twice a week for Covid please.
So... any questions?

If it goes tits up it will be the producers fault as much as hers because they’re hiring someone who is know to be a huge risk.
Also, if she starts dipping out of performances without explanation I wonder if people will cut her the same slack that’s been given to Jessie Buckley?

This is going to be a completely disaster. The woman has made a career from a show that required her to basically live her life on camera and then make quick one-off appearances on various reality and game shows. She hasn’t really had to work a full day for many, many years.
Getting her to commit to a long run where consistency is key to success is going to be like trying to get a hyper child to sit and eat their greens. It’s going to be a complete and utter sh*t show.
Best of luck to those who book tickets to see her and congratulations to her understudy who’s unofficially booked the principle role.
