Right so I really hope Bernie IS ill and her voice is not on the way out… she may not look it but she is 75 after all. She cracked during Gimick and Send in the clowns. IKTN sounded pitchy as usual LOL. She really tried to ramp up the acting to compensate though. It was the lower notes right in her chest voice where she was struggling. She was much more secure in her head voice. The people I went with today were like ‘who is the one with the weird voice’ 😭. Ultimately if you don’t love Bernadette or know who she is, objectively she has really weak vocals especially compared to everyone else. I love her so I don’t mind but… she does win people over more in the second act where she can be her funny self.
Oh and Clare was ACTUALLY GREAT TODAY. She was honestly one of the standouts for once!! Her LWL was as good as the first time I saw it (she’s never been on par since). Her vocal was so solid today, she was funny, the audience and my guests loved her.
I think out of all the older ladies Jo is the most consistent. She’s never been anything less than amazing each and everytime. You can tell that she is super disciplined and real professional (evidenced by her insane back muscles alone). She is a true example of a pro. Lea has also never been shakey but she doesn’t have to dance as much. On that note, her Roses Turn today was IMMACULATE.
It’s always interesting to hear what non biased ‘normies’ think of the show, and my guests loved Clare, Gavin & Lea the most. They also thought Beatrice is a future star.
It also left me wondering tonight, what is the future of Bernie’s career? I really don’t think she has it in her vocally to do another leading lady role (that has big vocal numbers) again. She could do Desirée perhaps but tonight left me wondering. She’s so stunning and charismatic though, I adore her.
There was a lady in the front row who was SO attention seeking omg. She was singing & swaying and pointing during every song. I think I was watching her as much as the cast. It was INSANE. Idk if it was ADHD or.. at the same time I can’t be mad because she was just so happy to be there. I guess her enthusiasm is better than a lot of the other staid audience members. Bernadette did blow her a kiss and the girl literally fainted hahaha.
Bonnie did a speech at the end for Theatres Trust, this is the 3rd speech I’ve seen her do and this one was extra funny : “you guys have been the best audience… this week” hahahaha.
