I saw this on Monday and loved it. I was having a very jolly evening until Bernadette sang Not A Day Goes By with the slideshow of Mr. Sondheim and ended up in floods. Her voice, while not what it was is still so beautiful and if it's a little weathered it's perfect for these beautiful songs of love and regret.

Eek, Bernadette was in very poor vocal health tonight (and I’ve seen it about 6 times now). Amazing that she is a trouper and stays on. But I did feel for her.

She first cracked during "I know things now" but I didn't think much of it because I don't think the song is the best fit for her voice. Her "Send in the Clowns" was absolutely magical only feeling slightly more tired vocally but given the nature of the song it's easy to work around. During "Sunday" and the 'in our Perfect Park' notes Bernadette couldn't really hit the notes properly, which is quite unusual for her so I started to think something was wrong (she seemed to be crying throughout the whole song, which I did find overwhelming and beautiful).
In act two "Broadway Baby" was fine so I started to think maybe it would work, but during "Gimmick" Bernadette was clearly holding back and not able to sing with the same strength she does usually. Her "Losing My Mind" was more restrained than usual but seemed to work, except that she couldn't hold the very last "my mind" note and actually repeated "my mind, my mind, my mind" three times to cover. Was very interesting to see how she works around this.
By the time "not a day goes by" came around, Bernadette seemed barely able to sing at this point and it was a combination of talking and singing.
I will be so curious too see if she performs on Monday, and if so how she is. Regardless, the audience was one of the most enthusiastic to-date and was absolutely loving every moment. And Bernadette was doing her best to cover her ailment/did not disappoint owning the stage as she does. What a great show.

I will try and catch it on Monday. Side note: I know Things Now stresses me out every time she sings it. It’s climbs so uncomfortably high and I’m always holding my breath because it obviously doesn’t look easy for her. I don’t know why she chose to put herself through that for 8 shows a week 🤣

Very interesting how you see so many young performers every day posted on that evil West End understudies Twitter account and yet we've never seen Bernadette/Lea/Bonnie Langford out with an understudy on... very interesting...

They are big names in a relatively short run though. They've all missed shows in their careers I'm sure, as well as many other actors of their age group. I do think that post-pandemic we've seen far more non-covid-(as far as we know)-related closures due to illness though.

Why is it ‘evil’? I’d like to know too! They celebrate covers going on, not people being off. I have been so excited to see some people getting their debuts!

On Friday, Lea Salonga waved at me when she did her bows and I nearly fainted from joy.

Hmm, from what I'm reading it would seem that Ms Salonga is being a bit liberal with her affections! Lol!

Lea is so good with the audience. I took my (then) 8 year old daughter to see her UK tour last year and Lea waved at my daughter, mouthed “Hi!” and then looked right at her when she was singing some of her Disney material. It absolutely made my daughter’s entire year. And mine 😂😂.

If anyone is going tonight can you please confirm if Bernadette is on?? Will do! About to book my ticket - if she’s on, will be interesting to see how she fairs compared to what you saw on Saturday? - if she’s not will be fun seeing other cast mates tackle her material
