She played Glinda on the international tour of Wicked After reading the blurb about her on the CFT website, I realise that I've actually seen her in FOUR things! She was wonderful in Xanadu at Southwark Playhouse, I just wouldn't have been able to tell you her name. She was “Unnecessary Norma” in the ENO Sunset Boulevard. The one who was skulking around in the background walking very slowly with pointy feet. |

This is the first year I am not going to Chichester in a very long time. Which is a real shame as I love Charlie Stemp and sounds as if is is brilliant as always.
Hopefully it will get a westend run that includes Charlie.

No there was this shadowy “young Norma from her heyday” inexplicably skulking around. Never spoke, never sang. We all wondered what the point was at the time.

I think they were going for more of an ethereal float, but due to making no actual reference to it, nor there being any other bits of non-narrative symbolism, it just looked odd. She did do it well though.

Well this was a great production and a good night out. As mentioned Charlie is outstanding and his dancing is a level above anything we’ve seen him do before with some fantastic choreography. Carly Anderson also very good and a great dancer.
I will agree that sitting at the side you lose a bit due to the angles, this has clearly been designed with a transfer in mind in a more traditional proscenium.

For the finale Bobby and Polly danced on a podium that raised up about mid pros arch height. There was then a level at the back where chorus girls came on ( Including a young Nicola Hughes!) and were dresses in Stars planets and moons motif. With the final picture them raising their arms and forming a giant crescent moon framing the two. So yep whilst not a sold moon the image was there. Caught this last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it, had never seen the show before and it was a good fun night out. Charlie Stemp was excellent, Carly Anderson also very good. Loved the energy, the dancing and the comedy. Gershwins music is always great and the band performed it well.
Sat in the central block, definitely preferable to the side blocks.

I attended last night. Charlie Stemp is a true star with bags of charisma, he was truly terrific. As I've previously posted, the supporting roles and ensemble remain weak (particularly the men) which is very disappointing for a production clearly destined for a greater life. Is this really the best Chichester can muster these days with jobs so sparse? Stroman reproduces most of the original choreography but some of the farcical elements fall flat. The "Polly" was fine but bland. Always a joy to hear the glorious music extremely well played. Having seen the show originally in NY and London, it never really did much for me but the local crowd adored it.

Well this was fabulous last night.
Charlie Stemp is actually a revelation. Funny, charming, charisma and a show stopping dancer. I can’t think of a better showcase for his talents than this role. A showcase that’s leagues above Half a Sixpence.
Carly Anderson I didn’t know but she’s wonderful as well. Not the glorious rich voice of Ruthie (back in the day)- but a great voice nonetheless and a great performance.
Stroman choreography remains absolutely sensational, and I really hope that this show transfers to London where the numbers will really raise the roof with a slightly less restrained audience.
5 stars from me. Pure joy. I’d say this is almost certainly going to transfer and it’s just what London needs.
