Yeah looks like they released more rush tickets. Kinda worrying. Noticed future shows aren't selling as great too.

Or they are following BTTF's lead and realise rush tickets get repeat attenders, fill the place up, build the fandom, sell merch, generate buzz! Because of the limit of 2 tickets and you have to be able commit on short notice (plus it's Wembley so you have to get there) it's unlikely to eat into the core family / preplanned demographic both of those shows mainly appeal to and instead create sales that would otherwise not happen and go to other shows. A great example of price discrimination in action!
BTTF have been really smart on this hence they have already recouped I believe!

I don't quite understand the rave reviews this show has been getting. It was good don't get me wrong, but it wasn't outstanding. I think Newsies relies a lot on its dance and choreography element, without which the show would be quite boring. The book/story isn't particularly great and the songs aren't particularly catchy. In this production, I did think the vocals weren't terribly strong either. We were sat in the front row of the Manhattan section and the walkway between our seats and the Brooklyn section in front had lots of action happening, meaning we were really up close and personal with some of the Newsies (and unfortunately meant we could hear some of the dodgy vocals going on, although tbf if I was dancing as much as they were I don't think I could even sing without my voice shaking so maybe I shouldn't judge too much). I liked Bronte Barbe as Katherine, but was less sure about Michael Ahomka-Lindsay as Jack. He sounded a little vocally tired, and I was a bit worried for his 'Santa Fe', but he still hit the big note at the end. He also didn't feel that charismatic compared to Jeremy Jordan. I wasn't massively invested in his Jack Kelly I can't lie.
I really enjoyed all the dance and aerial elements (even though the aerial parts definitely weren't needed I loved it anyway, especially in 'King of New York'). They seemed to really mix up dance styles, with contemporary, ballet, tap and acrobatics all seemingly interchangeably used. I did think that occasionally there was a bit too much going on at one time, especially when you'd have cast members in various different areas of the theatre and I didn't know where to look. The set was fine - I appreciated all the extra bits they added to the actual auditorium (e.g. the hammocks on the way in). The sound was ok, a few missed mic queues, but most things were audible. The lighting was pretty cool though!
I read someone say this was a 4 star production of a 3 star show and I think that sums it up for me.

I've heard people mention the various props etc as you enter the auditorium and seen some photos. Can I ask if this is for those entering via Door 2? As I don't remember seeing anything entering Door 1 or I might have been too excited to notice it.

Went this afternoon and agree about this being about the dancing. Also agree that vocals and stage presence could have been stronger. A word of warning about moving around auditorium - witnessed 2 falls after tripping over the ramps to the stage.

I think the songs are *so* catchy - but it wasn't until the second viewing I got properly into it and thought it was amazing - the first viewing I knew nothing about it at all, didn't know the songs and was initially a bit overwhelmed by all the running, jumping etc - now I'm doing my workouts to the soundtrack and going back later this week!! 😂

I've seen the bows on Youtube. I'm kind of looking forward to there being a replica revival of CATS, and NEWSIES fans saying they've ripped of NEWSIES. With the somewhat-immersive elements I'm getting similar vibes to the use of the Troubadour and New London back in the day. Even the story about producers thinking it would be hard to cast enough dance talent here for NEWSIES - exactly the same assumption about UK dance talent as back in 1981.

I'd seen neither the musical nor the film, so went in as a blank slate. And it was surprisingly enjoyable, with each dance number vying to out-do the previous one in athleticism and ingenuity. I was surprised that some individual vocals were a bit weaker than I might have expected (definitely not on par with the dancing), but otherwise, it's a super-accomplished production, with a vast set, smart direction, and energy to spare.
I got one of the rush tickets and was in "Manhattan," Row Y. If you can afford it, though, I think the front of Manhattan, or the sides, would be preferable: it all seemed a little too distant. (I read a review saying that one should avoid the sides because the show was played so frontal, but I kind of wished I had sprung for those instead.)

Made my second visit to Newsies last night risking life and limb with the slippery pavements and roads (where I live rather than Wembley which looked as if there hadn't been any snow at all. Obviously, a better council than mine).
Far more organised this time, programmes in stock, no big queue for merch and auditorium opened on time.
I did get a programme as I enjoy reading the bios and will be interesting in years to come reading it and seeing what some of the young newsies have gone on to. There are a few stars in the making. However, the programme is £9 and there isn't a lot of content so do think it's a bit overpriced.
I sat in the same place as last time, Richmond Row AA. In hindsight should have chosen a different section of the theatre to get a different perspective.
Show was as good as last time and the leads, especially, seemed to have settled into their roles nicely.
It's still the Newsies who make the show and they were just superb.
Audience were nowhere as good as the preview audience a couple of weeks ago but pretty much a full standing ovation at the end. My preview audience was way more enthuastic but that is because it was mostly Newsie fans there.
Not completely full, I would say about 80% which is a shame as it's a big venue to fill. One of the FOH staff told me the current capacity is about 1,100.
No doubt I will make a few more trips to see this before it closes in April.

Has anyone sat in the last two seats at the extreme end of rows J, K & L in the Brooklyn section?
They are radically less expensive than the seats next to them and there is no mention of a restricted view so I wonder what could have prompted that change in pricing. Thanks!

Seeing &Juliet ( 2.30 - when does it finish? ) going to Battersey Power Station ( bit to eat ) and then from there getting tube to see Hamilton, Her Maj. Theatre ( 7.30 showing )
IS - going to Battersey...going to mess things up you think? I see some tubes from some theatres as quick, other may take 30min etc.... too much rushing about? You think? Better to ignore Battersy and just concentrate getting to the next theatre ( and if so...thoughts on a bit to eat? a upmarket mcdonalds -level of budget perhaps )
So, thats my 1 question - whichi am aware is about 4 questions!!

I would ignore Battersea as you would really be cutting it fine time wise and that's not even allowing for any train delays. Nothing worse than being in a panic and arriving at the last minute or late.

Hamilton is at the Victoria Palace Theatre, it’s Phantom at Her Majesty’s (soon to be His Majesty’s) Theatre. If you want a nice restaurant that’s reasonably priced in the Victoria area I’d recommend Il Posto (as long as you like Italian). I’ve been a few times before visits to Hamilton and Wicked and they’re always efficient, friendly and quick, and the food is really good. |

Having recently done the Battersea Power Station lift experience, I’d say it’s something to be done in the morning (for a 2 show day) or a trip on a one show day. I went for a 10am visit for the lift and including that and a look around the station, I left around 1pm in order to get to my matinee show on a 2 show day. Personally, would skip the Station if no tickets are available for a morning visit. |
