Picture the poor cousin of Ghost meets Back to the Future - without the heart or entertainment value. It’s repetitive, boring and horribly schmaltzy. The target audience seem to be young ladies who were balling their eyes out at the prospect of losing their one true love. It’s that painful at times. With hardly any sort of actual plot. Some things should not be brought to the stage. Time Travellers Wife is one. If you do enjoy self harm … be sure not to book closer than Row F. The stage is insanely high. First row is Row B … they are effectively looking straight at a solid wall being the stage. Sounds a hoot

Saw this last night. It’s not as bad as stated above.
Not the best show on the west end, the story is a predictable love story. The music is fine.
It’s worth watching for the special effects and stagecraft alone, in my opinion.
Also they brought the whole band out for curtain call (as they’re offstage) which I thought was nice

I was a big fan of the original west end version of Ghost. Is this show similar vibes? Or better even?

I read the book some years ago and absolutely loved it. Don't think I can face this.

Ghost was far superior. Better production value and far better stage illusions. In terms of projections - there is only one key "time travelling" sequence ... but still nothing on the level of Back to the Future. Also - there is something a little uncomfortable about a 40 year old male arriving naked to spend time with the 10 year old version of his wife. Having not read the book - it appears there are some serious pedophilia concerns with the source material: nusantaranaga.wordpress.com/2020/11/10/the-time-traveling-sex-offender-a-review-of-audrey-niffeneggers-the-time-travelers-wife/vancouversun.com/news/review-time-travelers-wife-suffers-from-a-ridiculous-premise"Yet, when Bana appears in a manicured clearing and begins talking to a young girl from behind a bush -- where he is standing as a fully grown man sans clothing -- the skin crawls. The image doesn't suggest blossoming romance. It screams pedophilia, and that's a hard place for any love story to recover from -- regardless of the genetic time-travelling anomalies, and the overall cosmetic appeal of the given parties. An older man with a female child is such a visual clang ..." --- "But I am a parent to a 7-year-old in my 30’s now, and I there are things that bothered me now more than they would when I was younger and less aware. 36-year-old Henry met Clare when she was 6, and was a huge part of her young life. He was a mentor figure for her who tutored her, and probably played a huge part in moulding the woman she eventually became. He revealed to young Clare that they would be married in the future, and as a result, Clare did not have normal romantic relationships growing up, and saved herself largely for Henry. And whenever Henry visited teen Clare, they would touch and kiss in less-than-chaste ways, and she would fondle him in unmentionable places. At one point when she was 16, an adult Henry actually held her down and almost had his way with her before he thought better of it. I mean, I don’t blame the child, because she was a child, but Henry certainly ought to have been the adult here"

Sorry to bring an end to everyone's reminiscing. The first rule of TheatreBoard is we don't discuss former members...even to write nice things about about.

yeah didn't massively enjoy this. songs were meh, story was also meh. some of the on stage magic was quite cool, but i feel like most of it has been seen elsewhere e.g. in harry potter or groundhog day. agree that the stage is very high, really would not book any further forward than row F

I’m at the show now - in the interval.
Gosh this show is baaaaaaaad 1 star. I’m sorry. The score book set story and performances are all TERRIBLE.
I think it’s the worst musical I’ve seen in years on the West End. The music is hideously bad! How did this get past workshops?
Awful

I'm surprised how few board members have seen this or commented on the show. It's on for a good few months will it survive?

I saw this earlier in the week. I listened to a few songs before, Journeyman, wait for me and this time stand out for me. I thought it started strongly but dragged a bit in the first half. The second half has more momentum. Recommended if you are a fan of the film, or looking for a entertaining/ undemanding evening, especially if discounted! My group enjoyed it. As mentioned before, avoid front rows of stalls as stage is high! I thought Joanna sung beautifully.

Post show thoughts
The leads do their best with the terrible material. They sing well but the songs all sound the same are repetitive and go nowhere. The score is bad / the weakest thing of the show. With a different composer this would have been much better. The cast are talented but the material is so weak, the magic and effects so amateur and the whole musical drags and drags because of this.
Some people will enjoy the performances and the leads - but that’s not enough to save this for me.
1 star from me. I’m sorry! Can we have a poll please mods?

Had hoped this would be a good break for David Hunter in creating his first west end leading role as he has done so well in his take overs of kinky boots and once which he made his own.
It did seem board members were more enthusiastic about the show on its initial tryout run than what has ended up on the west end. Has anyone seen both and see any difference.

Just awful. I was bored within the first 20 minutes. No character development due to seemingly hundreds of very short scenes. The music is banal and repetitive. Can't see this lasting it's 6th month run - be very lucky to make it past Xmas. Trying to find some positives - there is a nice use of Peppers Ghost in Act1, and the short physical theatre & projection sequence at the top of Act 2 livened things up but was completely atypical of the whole show and frankly looked out of place.

There doesn't seem to be much promotion for this. I was in London for two days and didn't see one poster anywhere. I'd forgotten it was on until I walked past the theatre yesterday.

Had hoped this would be a good break for David Hunter in creating his first west end leading role What was Waitress then? Waitress was still a cover for a role already created on broadway, and the doctor is not the lead role. It would be great for the very talented David who often goes beyond just the stage performance in supporting the show and the fans of it to have success in a west end show and fully be the initial creator of the musical role.
