British social politics are fascinating right now, but London theatre remains obsessed with the USA. Do London theatres fear exposing their ignorance or disconnect on the issue? Easier to do the USA, where the UK audience know less of the full background and can't see where the plays are lacking?

Maybe Barlett offered it to them, and since they have some issues with programming at the moment, they went for it?

Interesting that this is going to the Old Vic given the Almeida presented KC3 and this is directed by the Almeida's AD. Wonder if they just wanted it to go immediately into a bigger theatre, or the Almeida didn't have space?

Yikes…Bertie Carvel is playing all the politicians and moguls now…He’s also going to be Tony Blair in the final seasons of The Crown! (Emmys incoming…!)
(I really hope there’s an Enoch Powell biopic happening in a few years’ time, but I would love Ben Daniels to play him in a movie so this could be his ticket to an Oscar bait role)

Big year for Mike Bartlett - revival of Cock, and new plays at OV and Lyric Hammersmith.
It looks interesting, but I agree with crowblack about London theatre's focus on USA but a curious lack of writers (or those commissioning them?) prepared to have a go at making sense of our own big social and political changes, as well as wider European politics.

That would be Brexit-hating London theatre who apparently have no interest at all in modern European politics, plays and playwrights but behave as if UK was a colony of USA. Also, this play will not be anything near to "wildly provocative" unless it presents Trump in a positive light. Do we think it will do that ? As others have said odd that this isn't on at the Almeida. Rupert Goold has been at the Almeida since 2013, I wonder when his contract's up ? |

The Inheritance, although written by an American, premiered first in the UK and became a smash hit but flopped when it arrived at Broadway. |

I don’t think it’s necessarily that. The Goold/Graham/Elton John musical is due to debut at the Almeida before the W/E then Broadway runs.
It’s probably just a case of what’s available, when. Theatre programming is like playing Tetris half the time.
^Best of Enemies is American and did well.

I meant the one for Broadway, though. Aren’t American audiences tired of Trump and GOP politics these days? I don’t know the full story of how come ENRON flopped on Broadway a decade back, though I guess doing a play about the financial crisis at the time that it was on very fresh memories isn’t a good idea.
I love Best of Enemies too (watched it on livestream broadcast). There are rumors on a West End transfer for that play but it depends on the transfer venue and the main actors’ schedules. I don’t know if it will translate well on Broadway either.
If 47th succeeds in the UK and they get a Broadway run, then they may time it for Bertie Carvel to win a Leading Tony Award!
