In his recent press tour McKellen has been saying he'd like to do a musical. I am sure any number of producers are rushing to make that happen right now but I cant figure out what I'd like to see him play. He's a bit old for Sweeney. Maybe a gender swapped production of Follies or Sunset Boulevard. Any ideas? www.theguardian.com/stage/2022/jan/25/ian-mckellen-stage-musical

He is a bit old for most musicals but I'd love to see him in something. Only time I've seen him on stage was in panto at the Old Vic and he was great.
Oh just thought. He could be the Narrator in Drowsy Chaperone.

Oh gosh a gender swapped Sunset would be extremely sinister. Aged has-been male actor lures in young, gullible female writer, seduces her with gifts and clothes and throws a suicidal tantrum when she goes off. Not sure that one would make it on the stage in this day and age.

Oh gosh a gender swapped Sunset would be extremely sinister. Someone on reddit suggested just swapping Norma to Norm and keeping Joe as Joe

It is a very small part but given the history of using movie stars how about Herr Schultz in Caberet? Would probably help the producers keep on charging the massive ticket prices.

He could easily do Mme Leonora Armfeldt in A Little Night Music. His Liaisons could be a showstopper.

He did a small walk-on part in the Les Miserables tour during its run in Newcastle. He came on with the students for the barricade scenes in act 2, and left after Drink with Me. It was so lovely to see him there, and I'd say 99% of the audience had no idea it was him. He even refused to join the curtain call, saying he didn't want to detract from the main cast.
I'd like to see him play Jacob in Joseph - not too heavy on the singing, and a bit of a sit down backstage for most of it.

I mean the obvious answer would to be revive the Lord of The Rings musical, surely? Perfect time with the new Amazon series coming too.

He could also do the role that Gary Wilmot played in Anything Goes as not much singing but a nice bitmap acting.

Is he too old to play the Wizard in the Wicked movie?
Because I’d love to see him in that role.
