So so agree - the Bob Hoskins production came at the start of my theatre-going life, and what a wonderful way to start! I think I saw that production about three times, which bearing in mind I was still in 6th form, it was a lot of Saturday job money being saved up. Wasn't it one of the first ensemble musical pieces that the National did, ie with a lot of the regular rep company rather than specifically "musical" stars? At least that's how I remember it. What was everyone’s favourite cast? I think Jamie Parker as Sky Masterson will be hard to beat. He is a fantastic singer and for me had a touch of danger about him, which I think Sky would have. I’ve seen Richard Fleeshman, Oliver Tompsett, Maxwell Caulfield, Clarke Peters and Ashley Zhangasa in Manchester. Julia McKenzie, Bob Hoskins, Julie Covington and the lovely Ian Charleson. With Imelda Staunton as a Hot Box dancer, and Jim Carter (who met Imelda on this show) and Bill Paterson as gamblers. Fabulous. This was pretty good though. Definitely worth standing for. Just one complaint: way too many plants. Not just the face-to-cleavage (which is ill-judged; if you’re taken in and think it’s spontaneous then it’s an unfunny sexual assault, and if you realise it’s a plant then what’s the point?) and the glass of wine, but also the people placed at the front to dance and clap in the big numbers and drive the encores in Sit Down. The fakery spoiled it for me - it doesn’t need it. But generally, excellent fun. |

I saw this again tonight and the guy getting the special motorboat action was a different guy and he stayed for the rest of the show, so I think they have to choose someone and clear it with them first. Also, she does it to someone else in the first act which I didn’t notice the other night.

LOVED this production.
I was skeptical in the first 15 mins as the whole immersive thing, visually from where I was seated, became distracting. But once you settle in and get used to it, the show flows like honey.
Great audience at the performance I attended who got every joke and seemed in love with the piece (but not in an annoying OTT way).
I had reservations on a couple of things, (and the backstage noise from where I was sat became distrating at times) but overall, was knocked-out by it. How stage management worked its magic to make this show run so brilliantly was a feat in itself.
No complaints here about any of the performances - I adored them all, especially Marisha Wallace who gave us an original and very funny Adelaide without resorting to the dumb blond cliches or broad touches we normally see with this show. The actors trusted the material...the jokes are funny as they are written and didn't need embellishment to land.
I highly recommend it.

Also, the guy in act two had a wristband on which I think they gave to standing ticket people? I didn’t get given a wristband when standing, but perhaps this signified he was “approved” for interactive elements as part of the show? |

Probably. I did notice others with them but couldn’t tell if it was everyone or not. So now I’m curious how you get a wristband ticket!

On Saturday the ushers on the doors were saying everyone who was standing needed a wristband, but they were also having trouble finding enough for everyone...
I had a wristband and didn't interact with any of the cast or get involved in any of the interactive elements.

In theory you can move about, but due to the number of people you generally have to stay in the same area. Or you could go right to the back and walk around. There are some prime spots on the corners between two raised areas. In most places, you’ll get moved away from the stage and also by people setting up the lowered areas for the next scenes (you can sometimes stand on the lowered areas when they’re empty). |

I've loved many promenade (errr i mean immersive) performances over the years (especially the ones directed by Graham Vick) and that feeling of walking around is fantastic. This one does not sound as pleasant. |

You can see me in that first picture, just behind the front row 👀while I moved slightly to the side either way, and forward and backwards, there were too many people to go wandering about it once it started, and the view was perfect where I was: I got there about ten minutes before it started and the view was fine, nothing happened before it started so wouldn’t get there too early unless you’re planning on pilfering one of the hats off the stool.

Are people doing that annoying thing where they try to muscle in on your space and nudge their way in front of you so you have to do things to make yourself big and wide ( not difficult for some 😌) to block them?

The email I got said the footage from the 20th will be used publically, so I'm hoping it'll get the NTLive broadcast like the other two immersive shows.
