I don’t know what the technical terms are but it’s all too close. Pull back the camera ffs! It’s like watching it with tunnel vision.

Oh I love the edits on this!
It'll be 5 years in a few weeks since I saw it and it's a lovely reminder of how good a show it was.

I'd forgotten how good Charlie Stemp was in this. Remember seeing it for the first time at Chichester and being mesmerised by his performance. Such a happy and feelgood musical.

I think this is a great recording of a fun musical. Very energetic performances all round and a star turn from Charlie Stemp 😊 I’m really enjoying it.

Great show and a great cast. But unfortunately this isn’t the best recording. The editing is a mess and those transitions are unnecessary. It’s like it’s been edited by someone who edits trailers together with loads of quick cuts. Still nice though to have this show captured for us to be able rewatch.

Am I missing something? Why have they renamed it Kip’s when it was Half a Sixpence before?

Am I missing something? Why have they renamed it Kip’s when it was Half a Sixpence before? I think its something to do with licencing. It's a reimagined version with additional songs, although it wasn't called Kipps in the West End so it's a bit strange.

Rights issues came up when they made the show available for amateurs. The original version is still out there for performance and so they had to rebrand to avoid confusion.
Everyone will still call it Half a Sixpence though.
And whilst I agree with those who thought the editing a bit intrusive, it still made better viewing than Anything Goes

Well I guess it’s a good thing that this charmless version doesn’t taint the name of the original now it’s called something else. I just do not get the positivity towards this. It’s absolutely terrible. All of the orchestrations just sound like Mary Poppins and Stemp is no more than a very efficient Chorus boy. The editing also renders it almost unwatchable.

I would have loved this on stage, but as a film the editing has destroyed the staging and fragmented the choreography, giving us relentless energy but little sense. It was hard to keep track of who was were.....the editing really was scattershot and so unmusical, cutting away mid action/sentence. A filmic mess but darn I wish I could have seen it live.

Although I loved the original film with Tommy Steele I thoroughly enjoyed watching this musical version. The whole cast were very good and particularly Charlie Stemp who was excellent and who knew Geoff from Corrie could sing 😅 Will definitely be watching this again.

Ian Bartholomew was creepy Uncle Ernie in ‘Tommy’ at the Shaftesbury 25 years ago so he has previous in the ‘cockernee knees up’ department.

If you’d gone to the Noel Coward Theatre a few months before Half a Sixpence opened you would have seen Ian Bartholomew showing off a lot more than just his singing in Mrs Henderson Presents…

After waiting so long for this to be screened sadly it was for me a huge disappointment as the joy of the show and the performances were ruined by the atrocious editing. It was such a glorious colourful production at The Noël Coward Theatre and whilst the energy was captured so much was lost by the endless succession of shots from different angles which appeared to last no longer it seemed than 5 seconds. I’m surprised that Cameron Mackintosh with his known huge involvement in his productions permitted the filmed performances to be edited in this way. It really should have been so much better.

Maybe I'm being picky but with the bar set so high by the filmed versions of Hamilton and Come From Away this one fell short. Charlie Stemp actually posted on social media warning about his overacting up-close on camera. It's a shame because I remember being pretty blown away by the production in person! My camera swaying during Flash Bang Wallop made me feel queasy.

Same as with Anything Goes, it seemed over acted all round, especially the comedy, not just Charlie Stemp. To be fair no doubt so it could be seen throughout the theatre. The whole production was very busy , made worse by the editing . But nevertheless a tour de force by all the cast who kept that pace up performance after performance. Charlie Stemp was very impressive , on stage more or less throughout , a wonderfully joyous performance, and a terrific dancer . The camp photographer at the end was just cheap , not funny, and not acceptable. As for the musical itself, it could do with a few more memorable songs, and the set wasn’t very imaginative or interesting.

Just finished watching this - as someone who loved this when it was at the Noel Coward, I'm pleased with how it turned out on film, and it reminded me of how much I loved this show and the performance of Charlie Stemp. For me, the new songs added to the show, and my favourite song in the show was one of the new ones (Pick Out A Simple Tune).

Watched it when it aired. As someone who never got the chance to see this when it was playing at the Noel Coward and has performed in a college production (using the Warner Brown script), I was looking forward to finally watching this production. I knew this version was different to previous versions and that it ended at the wedding, so I was curious as to how it would stack up.
Overall, I really enjoyed it, even though storywise I think I prefer the previous versions. The acting, singing, music and choreography were all top notch! Charlie Stemp was delightful as Kipps and Ian Bartholomew as Chitterlow was a personal favourite of mine throughout. But my reasoning for preferring the previous versions of the musical (like the Warner Brown one) is that I feel that ending at Kipps and Ann's wedding feels a bit too abrupt. Previous versions had more story afterwards, showing that even though Kipps has realised how much of a prat he was to Ann, money has still changed him, but not for the better. He still thinks that it can buy him happiness, until he loses it all and realises that he's been a plonker and learns his lesson. This newer version seems to somewhat neglect this and to me at least, it didn't feel like Kipps fully learnt his lesson.
But despite this, I still had a good time with this and if you want to watch a feel good old school British musical, then this is for you.
