My playwriting teacher saw it and told me it's rubbish... And 3 hours and 40 minutes long Well I would hope that your teacher also teaches you to make up your own mind and to develop your own tastes and style, otherwise they are going to churn out limited, pale imitations of themself. This is Kushner in Shavian mode, it's been developing for a number of years and at the latest Shaw Festival version (appropriately) appears to have gained excellent reviews. Angels in America is also seven hours long and I wouldn't lose a minute. |

Saw this at the Public Theater in 2011. Very long, low on tension, directionless, at that point, at least.

Reply was about your teacher's comment, not you. Understand you might want to defend them; would be annoyed if colleagues were so dismissive though. There is a need to understand the work of fellow professionals, rather than rubbish it. Some students can easily be swayed by staff with strongly expressed opinions, especially if they are going to be passing judgement on them. |

Saw this last night - it's just under 3hrs 30 at the minute.
It's 50% incoherent arguing over the top of each other, interrupting each other and impossible to follow any single characters thoughts and 50% genuinely insightful discussion of American ideals, politics and religion.
It's very well acted by the whole cast, but I found the play to be a little overwrought, when it settled down I was truly engaged. Despite the long running time it seemed to fly by for me, quite a few leavers at each interval though. My side circle seat became a lovely central stalls seat at interval 1.
For anyone interested, advertised running time is:
Act 1 - 1hr
Act 2 - 1hr 15
Act 3 - 55

Agree with raiseitup, this is fantastic. Now about 3 hours 25 minutes, which really did fly by! A few walk outs but not too many. Amazing performances all round and a great set.
If my playwriting teacher said this was rubbish, I think I'd get a new teacher.
Brief male nudity, no dogs.

I was there too! Lady next to me didnt return after second int but i dont count those as walkouts. I agree considering the three and a half hour eunnung time, it flew by, superb performances by a crack cast, if theres any justice it should transfer😄

Woman next to me didn't come back after second interval but I spotted her self upgrading to the stalls  Where were you sitting? I was at back of the circle, great view as some stuff was staged on upper levels of the set |

Set was great wasnt it? I was back row of stalls in the centre. It really whetted my appetite for Angels in America next year!!

I saw it tonight and I did enjoy it but I can see why it wouldn't appeal to everyone. For a 3 hour plus play it didn't feel long at all.

Is that the same person who claimed on twitter it was "Haemorrhaging audience" which is nonsense - I could see the whole audience from my seat at the back of the circle, there were a few leavers but no more than is usual. It is quite shouty though! In particular an extended scene at the end of act 2 with all the characters on stage having multiple simultaneous arguments. It's very cleverly written and brilliantly done, you need to focus on a bit of the stage at a time to work out what's going on. Kind of like a symphony of rowing. |

Her website is Stagereview (so sounds similar to The Stage, but unlike the latter, Anne Cox doesn't limit readers to 5 views per month) and I'm not sure whether she is a professional critic, but I do find it useful to read her reviews as she seems to travel quite widely within the south-east and sometimes beyond, so she sees productions I may subsequently catch on a tour, or even which may be heading for the West End. However, she reviews London plays/shows, too. I generally prefer to read as many views as possible, especially if the mainstream critics haven't covered something. |

Got a last minute ticket for the matinee.
VERY good! I didn't feel the length of it to be honest. Tamsin Greig was very well cast and wonderful to watch... in fact the whole cast were very strong.
Slightly slow start but it really starts to develop rather quickly. Yes at times you don't know where to zone into or what you should be listening to but it was interesting to watch.

Is it some attempt at humour to call a play "The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures" and then name one of its main characters "V"? This play sounds very good for those people who like this sort of thing but deadly nightshade for the rest of us.
