How depressing. Tootsie, Some Like it Hot and now Mrs Bloody Doubtfire. What year are we in?
I wonder why the producers who I believe made a considerable loss on Mrs Doubtfire in the US think it’ll do the business here? Perhaps they figure English audiences just can’t resist a bit of reheated pantomime?

The Manchester run was quite well-received on here and this board can be quite critical. Carried by a great cast and overall just a fun crowd-pleaser. It's definitely not another Tootsie...

I don't think comedy based on cross-dressing is as outdated as people make it out to be. Disguises and mistaken identities have long been a key element of farce. As for why it may fare better here than in the US? I suppose its failure in the states will mean that the show's creatives will want to rework it somewhat. It seems to already have been received better in Manchester at least anyway.

Added to that I think the film is just more popular in the UK than in the US.

Tickets are due to go on sale on Wednesday as far as I'm aware. Shaftesbury in May.

Plus Mrs Doubtfire is about a fathers love for his kids and doing what he can to still be part of their lives.

It also wouldn't be the first broadway flop to do well here.

    it's not the cross-dressing per se and there's nothing wrong with a well-written farce, but I saw both Tootsie and Mrs Doubtfire on Broadway (where I felt desperately sorry for Rob McClure doing his best but wasted in the lead role) and both felt incredibly dated to me, the humour was very much of its time (1982 for Tootsie and 1993 for Mrs Doubtfire). Also they both had completely forgettable scores. Clearly in these dire financial times, producers need crowd pleasers, but in my humble opinion, resurrecting yet another of these titles seems so lazy.  That said, of course I hope it does well for all concerned, certainly much better than it did on Broadway, the Shaftesbury can be an unwieldy beast unless a show is pretty well attended.

I saw some similar tweets when it was closing on Broadway. I think they’re outraged at the idea that a bloke in a dress is seen as a comedic figure. Hard to tell though. There’s a lot of outrage and victimhood on twitter about everything.

That's Priscilla, Tootsie, Kinky Boots and To Wong Foo out then.

I support trans rights but this isn't the right show to target.
