I absolutely must see this! One of my absolute favourite Sondheim shows, though I've never seen it live. I struggle to think of another musical that puts me through as many complicated emotions as Passion.
I'm curious of the choice of green in the poster - it gives off a very different vibe from other productions.

Passion is only Sondheim musical I've seen live in a theatre (Donmar) and not enjoyed. I've never listened to the cast recording prior or since, so maybe it's a grower? But I remember that night after the desperate scramble for a ticket, and I couldn't wait for it to finish after only 20/30 minutes. I went for the draw of Elena Roger, phenomenal in Evita and Piaf, and was sorely disappointed by all of it. I loved her in both of those and in Passion. Thought Thaxton and Strallen were great too. Actually, I think it's the only Jamie Lloyd production I've ever liked. Only seen the Donmar production which I loved. Didn't realise though that this was such a Marmite show, even with Sondheim fans. |

That Jamie Llloyd production at the Donmar was wonderful. I had seen the first production at the Queens and didn't care for either the production or for Maria Friedman but loved the show itself. It really came together with Elena Roger at the Donmar. It was so beautifully staged - almost in darkness with Christopher Oram's simple frescoed wall and arches behind. I loved the way the soldiers moved all the props and furniture.

That Jamie Llloyd production at the Donmar was wonderful. I had seen the first production at the Queens and didn't care for either the production or for Maria Friedman but loved the show itself. The two stand out things for me that didn't work was Summer Strallen as Clara on the table and when the me doubled for the minor female roles. |

You can’t remember it that well.. Scarlett was the Strallen Its an easy mistake to make. The Strallens are all identikits of each other. They do it all very well, but there's no personality to set them apart. |

Interesting that they have made such a large age difference between Fosca and Giorgio, but Dean-John Wilson is all kinds of wrong for Giorgio.

Looking at the casts of previous productions it seems reasonably common to cast Fosca around 5-10 years older than Giorgio (and Clara), but having almost 10 years between Giorgio and Clara and more than 20 between Giorgio and Fosca does seem unusual. Both of the women will of course play much younger on stage (unless the director doesn't want that!) so I wonder if they'll want Dean playing up a bit or if it's a conscious decision to have the age gap. |

I saw her in Billy Elliot at least five years ago and it was a little croaky for a lot of the time. I’d consider that a pop score rather than a musical score though which could make the difference. |

Well that livestream didn't inspire much confidence in me tbh. Obviously it's early in the process so none of them are too confident in the roles but none of them sang incredibly well and the age difference seemed very apparent, which isn't necessarily bad but it does feel odd since I'm so used to the original cast. And as I feared, Ruthie's voice wasn't very good. She can't seem to help but go flat on notes held longer than a second unfortunately.

I'm quite surprised by the casting, however one of my favourite productions of Passion was at Classic Stage Company (a 200 seater in NYC) which had a Fosca who was about 20 years older than Giorgio with Clara somewhere midway between - and it worked well. That said, it was certainly helped that in Judy Kuhn, Melissa Errico and Ryan Silverman it had three very good actors with very good voices.

If they're doing it at the 02, and you're in the cheap seats, Ruthie might just get away with it... None of the launch performances made me want to go to Manchester for it. Where was Clara's usual gorgeous soprano? Why cast Dean John wilson and what role is Ray Shell playing? I like the show alot but not that much. |

There’s a clip on YouTube of RH singing I Dreamed A Dream at the Lytham Festival a couple of years ago. I’ll not post it because it’s not very complimentary and apart from that there are some comments which suggest it was just an off night. It’s not great though.

No disrespect to Ruthie but Fosca is a hard role- both vocally and emotionally.
Whilst I'm sure she can do it- (I mean she's an experienced actress and I'm if she couldn't she wouldn't have been cast) but it's gonna be a challenge!

The casting is a worry .
Dean John Wilson- absolutely not. He’ll probably be off all the time anyway.
Kelly Price- love her but she’s not a soprano is she?
Ruthie may act it okay, but that voice is done. A huge shame.
