Oh Mark Gatiss! Perhaps it is time for me to see this Christmas classic...

That's quite a patch you're now covering, BurlyBeaR. 🙂 AUTUMN15 will get you a 15% discount at Nottingham...though not on the very cheapest seats.

There’s also a pay what you can performance at nottingham playhouse on the 4th November at 7.30pm, where it looks like the whole circle is available. Fantastic idea

PWYC tickets are also online; with lots of tickets available for this Thursday. Picked up a £36 ticket myself for a small donation. Seems worth a shot at this price.

Fantastic idea I heard about one venue that tried this idea and it turned out that what people could pay was hardly anything at all, including those who would have paid full price otherwise - not sure it's effective in achieving what they want.

You make a good point, me myself as a full time student couldnt pay £40 for a ticket, but maybe the majority of people that choose PWYC would normally pay full price. I'd be interested in what other schemes have more success in attracting a new generation of people to the theatre

Already the last week in Nottingham. Is there nothing you want to share with the group, Forrest? 🙂

Having seen this a few weeks ago I thought I should get round to writing some sort of review, it really put me into a Christmas Spirit. Fantastic fun although I don't get the focus on almost jump scares/ghosts. I assume they wanted a different twist but for me it just came off as something added quickly to give the play a trait. There was a break between scenes which I didn't understand either involving standing on scaffolding and singing to a baby, just felt out of place.
A special mention to Joe Shire, and of course the wonderful Nicholas Farrell, he played the part of Scrooge to a fabulous standard. Mark Gatis's adaption stays true to the original text which I love, the set is well done, along with lighting effects to a high standard.
Having paid under £30 id happily go again, but would I pay £60 in London when compared to the Old Vic production. Unlikely 3.5/5

Already the last week in Nottingham. Is there nothing you want to share with the group, Forrest ? 🙂 I didn't notice this actually had a thread, sorry! :) I have to say to please take my opinion with a grain of salt because a) this was my first time seeing a staging of "A Christmas Carol" (not a Christmas tradition where I am from) and b) I am not normally one for "light" theatre, but similarly to eua78 I thought this was a good way to get into the Christmas spirit. It is very creatively done - and I quite liked the highlight on the ghosts side of it (TBH, I expected that angle from Gatiss, as scary stories and ghosts are his thing, and he did not disappoint! - there is a moment where ghosts literally flood the auditorium, and I loved that!) - fast-paced and entertaining. The stage and the props are lovely, and very imaginatively design/made and used. The cast are all good (and then there is Mark, who is just most charming in everything he does! *silly swoon*) and - overall - time flew by quite quickly for me. I have some issues with the story and the text - seeing it for the first time, some of it seemed surprisingly outdated and perhaps even a little not-so-politically-correct to me, I'd certainly cut a few jokes - but who am I to criticise a classic?! And people bursting into songs and dance randomly isn't really my kind of theatre, but, again, that's just personal preference, not a fault of the staging. Not sure what the bar standard is for "A Christmas Caroll", but this is definitely entertaining and clearly made with a lot of heart. It got great reception from a few busses of school children who took over the whole Circle on the day I was there, who clearly found it very enjoyable. Overall, for me it was something - like panto - that was lovely to experience once, but I don't think I'll rush to go again, if that makes any sense? :)

I'm in two minds whether to book for this. It sounds like an interesting take on the story, but I've never been to Ally Pally and the seating looks awful.

I'm seeing the matinee of this today, hoping to have a Carol-Off against the Old Vic's production tonight if that goes ahead 😁

I enjoyed this very much despite the lack of Mark Gatiss (COVID I assume). It's a great space but too big for a theatre really - the circle is behind the stalls rather than above and the stage seemed a long way away. As does Ally Pally from Sarf London...

This was very good - particularly the chilling first half with excellent lighting. It’s a big stage but atmospheric with the deliberate run down decor of the theatre.
We were fortunate to be sitting in the tiered stalls (the front stalls are not tiered), so had a good overview.
I had almost forgotten how chilling the story is, particularly compared to the more festive approach at the Old Vic. Nicholas Farrell was very good and properly grumpy. Mark Gatiss was on, but it was a shame that he isn’t actually on stage that much.
I felt that they particularly highlighted the hard nosed Scrooge approach and Victorian attitudes to the poor, which are somewhat relevant today. Still, some nice carol singing too!

However good this was - & I appreciate that Nottingham is a long way from London, which was swamped with productions of A Christmas Carol this year - I do hope that this isn't going to become default Christmas theatre programming as panto already monopololises more than enough venues for weeks before and after Christmas, leaving little for those who would prefer a normal play.

How faithful is this to the text? Considering a trip for my year 11s...

How faithful is this to the text? Considering a trip for my year 11s... It’s on BBC iPlayer if you want to watch before booking. I don’t remember anything too different from the text.

I went to watch this tonight for the last show in Nottingham before it goes to Ally Pally. I thought the set was excellent- perhaps the best I've seen at The Playhouse - and some of the special effects were good.
Otherwise though I found it quite boring. I haven't seen it on stage before but obviously know the story but just thought it was a bit flat. I didn't rate Keith Allen either.
The audience however seemed to love it so perhaps it is just me. Bah humbug!
