Never seen it (film or stage) but bought the CD.
As is sadly pretty standard for film to stage musicals, it’s a very mediocre score IMHO.
Mind you I enjoyed Ghost and Pretty Woman despite this, so maybe if you’re a fan of the film it works. Never listen to them now though!

I really dislike the film but absolutely adore the musical soundtrack, so I really hope plans to bring it over do eventually materialise. I wouldn't be trying to convince anyone else it's a musical masterpiece, but it really suits my tastes; genre-wise it doesn't sound quite like any other show I'm familiar with, it's funny, and I think it does a fantastic job of conveying the characters. I find when I listen to it even though I've seen next to nothing of the actual show, it's really easy to imagine what's happening, facial expressions, and how characters are interacting with each other. In particular, I love the flow of the back and forth in Say My Name, and I know someone just like Delia in No Reason, so that's especially funny to me. If I could have 1 musical theatre wish it would be for this show to come over.

But love the musical soundtrack and it’s one of my most played. Seeing the trailer from the broadway production, it just looks like my potential favorite show ever. Have some bootlegs stored in a hard drive, but resisting the temptation to check them out until I’m able to see a live production of this 🙏 The day they hopefully announce the show for London, I will be booking a trip right away 👀 |

Count me as another one who jumped in my seat when I saw activity on this thread, and another person who's been waiting... years... to be able to see this.
It's a fun and sharp show, with actually quite a young fanbase - Lydia is catnip to strange and unusual teenage girls. And IMO it takes the best parts of the film while leaving behind the more clumsy and outdated bits. Hope to see it on stage someday.

I saw it twice on Broadway and loved it - also jumped when I saw this thread revive because surely right now, with the sequel coming out and reviving interest in the IP, would be the perfect moment to launch it? And God knows, the West End could use some big splashy fresh shows.
Making Lydia the focus of the stage show was genius, I think. Yes, the character is catnip to teenage girls, but I think her struggle to deal with her mother's death and reconnect with her father gives the stage show an emotional depth that the movie simply didn't have and it's something older audience members can get behind too.

Please no… I don’t want a smaller scale production, I want all the bells and whistles and sand worms that the Winter Garden had!!! And Alex Brightman would be very welcome too, but I’m far more flexible on the casting than on the rest |

I'd heard that rumour also, I believe it came up after Covid and then the rumours about it going to the West End started again. The tour is currently making more money than the Broadway version ever did so them not wanting to stage another massive production and go rake money in on a UK tour would be a reasonable business decision. The US tour going around right now is basically the same show with some differences which are just natural when having to move from venue to venue (restaged parts due to the lack of a trapdoor, some bits reorchestrated for time.) The puppets and sets are the same, just smaller in size. But everything's there. Of course I'd love this to go to the West End but at the same time a tour wouldn't faze me either from seeing it a dozen times. "Don't care how, I want it now!" as a certain girl also in a WB musical said 
EDIT: I would like a new performer instead of Alex Brightman, actually. The tour casts have been really good and completely spin new angles on the character. Fingers crossed for Lipkin to do it if it ever happens.

I find this type of post hilarious Who exactly are you expecting to pay for the staging, production and running of a massive musical I do think there is some denial in the reality of what is going to happen in terms of (particularly) musical theatre The best you can hope for are black box limited runs by Jamie Lloyd Or a stale revival |

Anyway, demand or not, Tonys bear minimal connection to quality. Starlight Express was one of the best shows to ever grace Broadway and won zero IDK 🤷🏻♂️

This wasn't winning any Tony awards because it was up against HADESTOWN and the Oklahoma revival 😂 Most attribute the lackluster success to high ticket prices and advertising not catering to the real audience, which were teens. They marketed and priced and picked based on nostalgia for people who knew the film, who would have the income to see such a show. It meant that while clips and the soundtrack album and bootlegs got a lot of traction, the show itself did not. I don't remember if it had a decent rush or lottery system or not, I don't remember. Hence why it got kicked out the first time AND the second time, because it was a really expensive show to run and it just was not making back the money. But with the tour they've definitely learnt their lesson and the prices are much more reasonable so the tour is making money hand over fist. It recouped in about half a year. The advertising is definitely focused solely on the social media front now and are banking on its fanbase. EDIT: I never saw it in person even though I was in NYC in October 2022 because the tickets were simply just prohibitively expensive for our group. Even though there were seats left when we turned up on the day we were offered $150 seats at the back of the theatre. I think producers just did not understand their audience. I've only ever seen this show through bootlegs, which I really wish wasn't the case because I love it. We saw Into the Woods instead by the way |

Id seen Alex on plenty of bootlegs, but honestly there was just something extra from him that I experienced in person. We absolutely must get him for a London run, then someone else can take over. |

It found a new teen audience later on when prices dropped as has been discussed, but it's a very poorly constructed show with an average score. Alex Brightman was brilliant, and the set sublime, but the material let it down severely. As a fan of the movie it was a bit of a chore to get through in New York. It just missed the mark completely and skewed into something that had very little in common with the original movie, and there's a reason the audience it eventually discovered is largely from a different generation to those who grew up with the film, unlike - say - Back to the Future which transferred the source material in a way which appeals to existing fans as well as bringing in new ones. All my opinion, of course, but this was just a huge disappointment for me and I can imagine a cutdown/touring version - especially a UK budget - failing dreadfully without the set and design to lift it. |

The musical was never intended to follow or adapt the original film faithfully... they joke about that 2 minutes in! It and BTTF definitely go two different ways about moving from screen to stage.
But I'm sorry you didn't like it. I still find it a really funny and enjoyable show, with some pretty memorable and great tunes.

MJT believes that they're waiting for Mean Girls to close (whenever that happens) to move into the Savoy...?
I dont think they need the Savoy specifically, there are plenty mid-size houses that would be better fits (seeing what happened at the Wintergarden in NYC)
