I do wonder if Sondheim wasn't as keen being solely the lyricist on both WSS and Gypsy compared to his own shows where he composed the score and wrote the lyrics. Yeah he has been quite outspoken about not wanting to be just the lyricist but then he was persuaded into giving it a go to gain some experience, working with Bernstein (WSS) and writing for a star (Gypsy)

And his WSS lyrics only fail for me when they (understandably) avoid swear words that would be part of gang talk. Swear words would have meant the show's album could not be shipped over state lines but it might, also, be at odds with the style that Laurents had established. I was at an Italian language production of WSS and the equivalent of eff you, which is what Sondheim wanted at the end of Krupke, was incorporated in the translation. It was fine but somewhat at odds with the non-swearing book. The problem with Tonight is that it's lyric is overly formal for two adolescents. But it's not the worst one has heard.

After seeing Anything Goes, it got me thinking about Cole Porter songs, he wrote so many great numbers that it's hard to pick a favourite but I love Brush Up Your Shakespeare and I Hate Men from Kiss Me, Kate.

You Can't Get A Man With A Gun. Great tune, brilliant lyric, funny every time you hear it, virtually foolproof (provided you master the lyric and can act a bit) and you get to yodel! Oh a man may be hot, but he's not, when he's shot..
Just perfect!

For R&H - If I Loved You. For Sondheim, either Sunday or Being Alive. Or Move On. For Lloyd Webber, either Memory or With One Look. For Bernstein, Make Our Garden Grow. (When will Barbra ever release her version from the 80s with that fantastic final note?!)

Just realised that we are all forgetting Freddy My Love from Grease. What an embarrassing oversight 🤣
