What should they be doing to reach beyond their core audience? Stage the great Feydeau farces. I mean I might be wrong, maybe this exploration of migration and racism will come out against the former and in favour of the latter, but on the whole I imagine it won’t and will be entirely unchallenging for their non-migrant non-racist audience. |

But Rufus - holding his nose - has already announced that for financial reasons they’re going to do one musical a year going forward. However, I expect they’ll mostly be new musicals exploring migration and racism. |

I'd love to see research on NT ticket buyers. I think they are less politically homogeneous than you might imagine (or why do the Mail and Telegraph bother with reviews?) Musicals and farces would sell tickets, but I'm not sure they'd diversify the audience.

The National were kind of doing one musical a year anyway.
I have always said that the National and Chichester to come to think of it should do a big Christmas musical year, instead of the constant flow of dreary plays, which some of them are not any good anyway, then just maybe for once they can focus on quality rather that quantity.

Since the NT seem to have a preference for our American musicals, they might consider the Bock and Harnick musical Fiorello!, the 1959 musical about the Mayor of New York City. It's hardly ever revived, has a great score, and it does touch on issues of diversity and political corruption. It tied with The Sound of Music for the Tony Award for Best Musical (winning over Gypsy and others); and it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. |

Nothing of much interest for me in the NT's announcement. "Paradise" maybe. "East is East" is fun if you haven't seen it before but the film was so good I don't think I'll bother. This "Hex" musical written by Mr & Mrs Norris .... hmmmm ....

Not the first time a new Richard Bean play has been announced by NT in a blaze of publicity which subsequently never appeared - despite tickets having been sold for it. The Count of Monte Cristo being the previous one, hastily pulled because the script was no good. |

Meh, nothing really jumping out at me in this latest season.
I fall between the cracks of the bases it's trying to cover, I think....
East Is East = one of my favourite films, and I doubt the Trafalgar Studios production from only a few years ago can be beaten anyway.
The Normal Heart - I've seen the film, plus seen more AIDS dramas than I've had hot dinners!

Interesting to see Rockets and Blue Lights as part of this. It had only played a handful of performances at The Royal Exchange before the first lockdown and seemed to be well received. I’d have thought they’d want it back, especially since it’s bringing back their original cast, but apparently not.

It does feel like an attempt to create a season that is "relevant" rather than one that might ... entertain/thrill/delight.
We have had a rough 2 years. Is it too much to ask for our national arts providers to help lift the mood of the population with things that boost our collective happiness?
I am fed up with worthy. I want to be excited.
Challenge us with more "interesting" stuff in a couple of years. For now, let's focus less on issues and more on entertainment.
That doesn't mean doing cheap farces or slapstick. It means doing pieces that will engage a broad audience and have them leaving theatres in a better place than when they arrived.
