I think the show is a masterpiece and saw it twice at The Cambridge.
I think we need to stop worrying about how audiences will react to any show according to their levels of acceptance. People can find something to be offended by in just about everything these days so if we go down that road, we risk turning art into something safe, watered down and dull.
Musicals, like any other art form, can be a vital tool used to mirror society and reflect to us the good, the bad and everything in between. 'Jerry Springer' actually had a moral to the story (if you look at the outcomes of the characters parodied in Act One to what they describe about their lives in Act Two) and was more than just a foul-mouthed fiesta.
I would love to see a legit opera company take it on.

Ugh, I'd kill for a revival or tour. Some of the hyperbole above is hilarious: if it offends you, don't go and see it... honestly. It was already toned down a few years ago, by removing a lot of the "gay slurs". Personally, as a gay man, I found them hilarious in the context of the show... People just need to relax... honestly.
