This won't affect Jessie doing another musical. The only thing that will affect that is film and TV work. It will not stop her getting work. I'd wager almost no one (apart from a small number of people - most of whom I imagine on this board) are kicking up a fuss that she isn't there - so she'll do just fine. Jessie is a undoubted talent who has successfully created her own career path and will no doubt continue to be in demand for the off centre roles she plays so well and indeed she has at least two film shoots this year already listed. But it would be surprising if producers haven't noted her attendance record for whatever reason on a barely six month run. While a fair number on this board booked for her as the main draw there have been enough comments on that a large part of the audience seem to have no idea who she was. Eddie could have sold the run on his own name alone. I am sure she will be back on stage at some time but it would be surprising if it's another musical before she does a play. With the new horror movie men coming out most people who see her will be aware of her dramatic acting rather than her singing. |

Jessie would realistically make much more money for film/tv than for stage work and if she doesn't do musicals again. She could easily do straight acting roles on stage if her issue has been her singing voice.

Jessie was out tonight. I think she performed the matinee though. It was my first time seeing Emily Benjamin and in all honesty, Jessie is the superior actor but Benjamin has the better singing voice. Benjamin's performance of Cabaret was very good, probably her best moment in the show. I wasn't impressed by her book scenes and the choices she made but overall she was fine.
Quite a few celebrities were in attendance tonight: Jacob Elordi, David Suchet and Rebel Wilson. Bizarrely, Suchet and Wilson came together. An odd pairing, no?

Jessie was out tonight. I think she performed the matinee though. It was my first time seeing Emily Benjamin and in all honesty, Jessie is the superior actor but Benjamin has the better singing voice. Benjamin's performance of Cabaret was very good, probably her best moment in the show. I wasn't impressed by her book scenes and the choices she made but overall she was fine. Well, whatever the ins and outs are of why Jessie Buckley is MIA so often, one thing's for sure - the late, great Dame Diana Rigg would not have been impressed. Look at her reaction when her My Fair Lady on Broadway co-star Lauren Ambrose opted not to do the Sunday matinee.

Buckley’s career will continue to rise. Her return engagments, I’m guessing, will be plays and not so musical. Either way, she is a once in a generation talent. Her performance in Cabaret was the most electric artistic expression and the best thing I’ve seen on stage in 30 years of theatre going. I understand the frustration of having missed her, but I will treasure my experience in the Kit Kat Club.
In other news: any idea if posters or window cards are being sold? Only programmes when I visited, and I would love a poster with the current cast’s names on it before they wrap up this Saturday.

As I'm never going to witness her performance now (unless any "boots" eventuate) I'm very curious to how she performed Mein Herr and Don't Tell Mama. Was her entire performance in the rather grotesque style of the title song or did she play it a bit straighter in Act I? |

Her “Cabaret” won’t work for everyone. It’s a totally new take on the song and for that alone I appreciated it.

I think it does only work in context having seen the character's reactions in the preceding scenes and how she is played generally. I can entirely understand it seeming odd out of context. |

It's definitely an in context thing (which is probably why we've not had a cast recording) - can confirm it is electric in the room and the definition of a showstopper

Having read these comments I just searched for the recording and yep, it does sound a very strange performance out of context. Don't Tell Mama is the same, it sounds like she shouts random words throughout it ("SHUSH up, don’t tell Mama..")

I also thought Cabaret sounded quite bad in the theatre and the shouting was excruciating. As I said before it's probably the way Buckley is being directed, but it left me completely cold.
