So how many people are going to disappointed on the night when they find out Annie Lennox isn't appearing? I've had 2 friends contact me today asking how they can get tickets to see her in Cabaret.

I'm sorry, but who says that Buckley doesn't belt the songs? Apart from Maybe This Time, she belts her *** off in Mein Herr and (of course) Cabaret, way more than other Sallys. I doubt people who are commenting stuff like that have actually seen the show 😂 Seen the show and seen plenty of Sally's over the years who have conveyed the emotions and power of the songs as much as Jessie does and in many cases more so. Which ones were your favourites? I think Anna Maxwell Martin for me.

Kander and Ebb never loved the film for that very reason. Their favourite Bowles has always been Judi Dench, who arguably "sang" even less than Jessie Buckley does. If things were only ever staged the way the authors imagined it then that’s every modern day Shakespeare out of the window. I doubt last years Carousel would have made it to the stage either as well as a million other shows. What the authors imagined is the very last thing we need to concern ourselves with, it seems. Surely there is no point in a stage version recreating the movie since there is already, ehm, the movie?

Lots of people want a replication of the movie they know and love, with more songs.

I didn’t ask for the movie to be recreated, I said I’d like to see a more showbizzy version where Sally sings the songs as big belting songs rather than some sort of tortured inner monologue. We’ve had multiple revivals of “dark Cabaret” which all sound extremely similar but no one ever demands anything different?

You've been going on about this from even before the show started previews: Cabaret has never been a pizzazz show. Making it "dark" is not something that the revivals made up in the past thirty years, it's always been like that. Some Sallys have been stronger singers than others, but there is no "dark Cabaret": it's just Cabaret.

And I’ll carry on “going on about it” as long as anyone else keeps “going on about” how Sally Bowles isn’t supposed to be a singer because I’m well tired of that old line 😝. And with that ill stop going on about it (for a bit) 😌

Problem now is that you start wonder if even the kit kat club would employ a snarling, shouting Sally annoying all the drunks and addicts and likely to drive them away
Never quite sure how much of a dive it's meant to be, in any production it can afford to have a small band, an alleged singer , five backing dancers and a host as well as lighting and crew it cannot be doing too badly , I have always presumed it's very much like the playhouse, acting dark and sleezy but charging a premium for the privilege of being there.

At the risk of getting all 'Blade Runner is he an android, no he isn't, yes he is there's unicorns etc etc' about this, the musical refers to dreams and sleepers, and the Cabaret numbers and the cabaret itself can be viewed as a dream-space or fantasy, presided over by a sinister spirit, not a flesh and blood human being. And in that dream, unlike life, Sally can express herself by singing belting numbers brilliantly alongside this spirit (I may have always subconsciously read Dorothy in Oz into that casting). Because if Sally is untalented and the cabaret we're watching is the real world one, why would they employ her alongside their dazzling Emcee to ruin properly great numbers?

The programme is a rip off and absolutely Not worth the money IMO. I wish I’d looked in it before I paid for it , wouldn’t have bothered!

Tbh I preferred the ending of the Will Young version Did they change this from the version that was in the West End with Anna M-M and James Dreyfuss? I thought it was essentially the same production just adjusted for a tour that ended back in the West End.

The programmes are £15 which is expensive. It is a nice production though with good essays. It's in the style and proportions of a 12" album sleeve. We had a wonderful evening at the show so we did want these as a memento. Thanks so much! Yes, definitely want a memento. Do you recall if they sell shirts or anything like that? Might bring something home for my roommate for taking care of my dog! I don't remember any other merchandise but it may have been there. The foyer is quite chaotic as the front doors aren't open. As far as I can remember there wasn't a stall - it was just an usher standing with the programmes in a tight corner near the doors.

I'm kinda surprised this is aiming for a long run anyway. I actually just expected it to be a temporary "prestige" production for a limited engagement. I really didn't considering the money they poured into it. The whole changing of the theatre to the Kit Kat club would seem a waste for a limited run.

The KitKat club can be removed with the outside boards/ stickers going, inside a few drapes and reusing the front doors again for the main entrance. After that you have a small prestige in the round theatre for plays or musicals , the stall tables swapped for seats or wider performance space. And all designed to encourage drinking and food purchases which seems to be in demand item at present. The club idea is superb and for me is the main draw of this production but it's never seemed so fixed that it only works as the KitKat club and would be amazed if ATG signed off all the changes just trusting on cabaret to cover the capital. Is it listed theatre as then the application would normally state if the changes are temporary or permanent

I remember the final scene being dramatic as if they were all in a “shower”/“gas chamber”, very dark

Tbh I preferred the ending of the Will Young version Apart from Will Young being in it… sorry couldileaveyou … I’m 🤐 from now! I won’t disagree with that. I think there was some girl from Eastenders as Sally, I may be wrong, I got the understudy which was perfectly fine. The thing I remember about the day I saw it was I had 3 shows and 1 cabaret in the same day, it was close to Christmas too. Surprised I didn’t nod off in the evening show

Thinking was at the Savoy and yes a girl from Eastenders. She was OK and Will Young was pretty good. At the end you just see the backnof a group of people naked walking towards the back of the stage as if going into the gas Chambers. It was very stark and we all left the theatre in silence.

Lots of people want a replication of the movie they know and love, with more songs. Totally. And this is the challenge that the producers/directors of such shows have. e.g. I got to speak to Arlene Philips at the (re)opening night of Grease last summer, and it is challenge to give the audience what they want (when a film version is the best known version of a piece) and doing something true to the original script.

Michelle Ryan was the girl from Eastenders, though one of the best Sally's in that run was Amy Nuttal from Emmerdale.

Sam Barks did it on the first tour. Wayne Sleep as Emcee. Both dreadful.
