But what is Sally supposed to be like? Yes I know she was a low rent, mediocre performer in the book (and the person she was based on in real life) but now it’s a musical. No one is going to portray the star of the show as a rubbish singer because nobody wants to see that. And because most people have seen the fantastic, dynamic not at all crap performer as portrayed by Liza the expectations are sky high. How can any production resolve the problem of her being crap, whilst satisfying the fundamental requirements of a musical?
Does anyone really want to see a dirty looking Sally Bowles croaking out Maybe This Time? No.

No. Except the Broadway audience who saw the Sam Mendes' revival running for 6+1 years with mostly non belting Sallies? Or John Kander himself saying Judi Dench is the best Sally he has ever seen? Or more generally the audiences of most post-movie revivals which had healthy runs without powerhouse belters both in London and on Broadway? |

Point taken. But try taking a production of Cabaret out on tour with a non singing lead and watch it bomb.
Actually I think that already happened with Louse Redknapp 😬

The OLCR (Judi Dench and Peter Sallis) is my go to recording.
Sally is a singer, just not a great one, though Jane Horrocks couldn't even be called that at the Donmar.

I did. Along with the world and his wife. I must be the cousin thrice removed then because i wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. I don’t care what starry actors are involved. In my humble opinion this show does not work on stage. It is a poor watch. Watch Liza in the film instead it will be more satisfying and you’ll not feel cheated. GET OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  |

I really don't understand the love for the film version of Cabaret. The stage show has a real impact with a great production. The heart is the Schneider/Schultz relationship for me and that is just sidelined in the film. I also don't by the Minelli/York relationship. It ends up boring me whenever I have tried to watch the film. Joel Grey is good but his performance doesn't suit the medium of film. I know many will brand me a heretic for not sharing the adoration for the film. But I miss too much from the original. I watched the film last year for the first time in years and (outside of the Kit Kat Club scenes) had forgotten how DULL it is!!!!!!!! Fritz and Natalia are as dull as ditchwater and can't hold a candle to Schneider, Schultz or even Kost!!! Liza is a great new interpretation of Sally (an inauthentic one, but very entertaining). |

Actually I think that already happened with Louse Redknapp 😬 I maintain you have to be a DAMN good actress to play Sally Bowles successfully. Louise is not an actress. It is an acting role first, singing role second. Hence why Anna Maxwell Martin was superlative in the 2000's. And why Jessie Buckley will be ideal for the role this year. (although I would say her vocal and acting talents are equally strong) |

I think that it possibly looks very tame now in retrospect. Especially since TV shows etc since have depicted that era far more authentically, given less stringent censors

If M is the clue, Judi Dench makes most sense even though she's twenty years too old for the role, but then again it's a kind of ageless part, open to interpretation. It reminds me of Angela Lansbury doing A Little Night Music. Also makes sense given her history with the show, originating Sally in London, and also recording Schneider for JAY's complete Cabaret in the '90s (opposite Fred Ebb of all people!)... she also matches the heft of Eddie Redmayne, another Oscar-winning movie star name, with Jessie Buckley, a (rising? half risen?) stage/TV/movie star name... Speaking of movie stars, Saoirse Ronan strikes me as much more of a typical Sally than Buckley - I'd prefer to see her in Cabaret than Macbeth, but anyway...
